Icis Villas
Brewers Bay

This property was impacted byHurricane Irmain September 2017. We will update our review as soon as we have more information. If you’re lucky enough to have family in Tortola, you stay with them when you visit the British Virgin Islands. If you don’t have such luck, staying with Icis Malone and her family is the next best bet. Icis Villas was once the private home of Mrs. Malone’s father, which she has since transformed into a tiny mid-range hotel. The 15 rooms are spread across the several small buildings that dot the property. Decor throughout is a bit dated, but the apartment-style units are spacious and spotlessly clean. There’s a small pool surrounded by tropical gardens, and beautiful Brewers Bay is just across the street. Although the hotel doesn’t have a full-service restaurant, free continental breakfast is served daily, and guests can request additional meals for an extra charge. Plus, all rooms have fully equipped kitchens. Located on the northwestern side of Tortola, Icis Villas is a bit removed from tourist attractions, restaurants, and shops. Travelers looking for a hotel in a more touristy neighborhood might prefer Agape Cottages, a similar property in Cane Garden Bay.

Agape Cottages (Coconut Breeze Villas)
Cane Garden Bay

**This property sustained significant damage during *Hurricane Irma* and Hurricane Maria in September 2017 and is currently closed for repairs until November 2018. We will update our review as soon as we have more information. **With large apartment-style units and warm, hospitable owners, Agape Cottages feels like across between an independent villa rental and a value-oriented bed-and-breakfast. This hilltop property is quiet and family-friendly, and offers stunning views of Cane Garden Bay. Each of Agape’s seven apartment units has a full kitchen, living area, and either one or two bedrooms — making them ideal for travelers looking for self-sufficiency. But thoughtful touches like hand-drawn maps of the neighborhood, a box of local recipes, and a few essential provisions supplied by owners Donna and Tom help set Agape apart from a typical vacation rental. There is no pool or on-site dining establishment, but Tortola’s famed Cane Garden Bay and a handful of local restaurants are within walking distance. The only major drawback here is the huge, steep hill that separates the property from the main road and the beach below. Anyone looking for a similar, less hilly, property should check out Icis Villas in Brewers Bay — which has a pool, but doesn’t have much to do within walking distance.

Long Bay Beach Club
West End, British Virgin Islands

This property was impacted by Hurricane Irma in September 2017 and is currently closed. We will update our review when we have more information. An incredible location is about all the aging, three-and-a-half pearl, 50-room Long Bay Beach Club has going for it. The stunning Long Bay Beach boasts incredible views of neighboring Jost Van Dyke and is the perfect spot for sunsets and snorkeling. But, the hotel’s rooms are worn and dated, the pool is small, and a surly waitstaff and mediocre food will hardly make you want to dine at either of the on-site restaurants. The Sugar Mill Hotel is located on the same beach a few miles down the road, and has nicer rooms, restaurants, and amenities, though nightly rates tend to be pricier.

Sugar Mill Hotel
N Coast Road Little Apple Bay, VG1130 Tortola

This hotel was impacted by Hurricane Irma and Hurricane Maria in September 2017 and is currently closed for repairs. For quaint beachside lodging in Tortola, it's hard to beat the Sugar Mill Hotel, an upscale property that occupies the site of a 400-year-old sugar plantation. The property is near the top of Tortola’s boutique offerings, with charming, elegant, and understated design throughout, blending colonial, rustic, and modern tropical details. Every common area -- from the beach to the chic sundeck to the gourmet Terrace and Sugar Mill Restaurant -- has an intimate, exclusive vibe. All-inclusive rates are available, and while the poolside bar can be lively at night, things here are decidedly quiet. The 24 breezy rooms feature modern amenities like free Wi-Fi, mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs, and sea-view balconies. Check rates at Frenchmans for a similarly priced, four-pearl alternative with large, villa-style rooms and a stunning, more intimate beach.
