Bottom Line

Located in Tokyo's trendy and youthful Shibuya district, this mid-range hotel offers 205 compact guest rooms, free Wi-Fi, and a small restaurant with breakfast (for a fee), but little else in terms of amenities. All the guest rooms are equipped with mini-fridges, flat-screen TVs, and electric kettles, and have cramped en-suite bathrooms. For more floor space and a more upscale atmosphere, travelers could consider JR Kyushu Hotel Blossom Shinjuku, which can be slightly pricier.

Shibuya Tobu Hotel

Scene

Simple hotel with a renovated lobby that lends a chic atmosphere

Thanks to renovations completed at the end of 2015, the spacious lobby of the Shibuya Tobu Hotel has an appealing, chic look. Floors are covered in elegant marble tiles in brown tones, and the soft lighting accents -- including an illuminated reception counter -- create a warm and welcoming atmosphere. Contemporary sofas in black leather are arranged in a seating area, and a wall made to look like a bookcase provides an interesting visual accent. Most guests staying here are leisure travelers visiting the city as couples or families who choose to stay in Shibuya for its exciting, youthful vibe.

Rooms

Clean and functional guest rooms with small bathrooms

Guest rooms at Shibuya Tobu Hotel are clean and comfortable, but they lack decorative details, giving them a functional feel. Like many mid-range hotel rooms in Tokyo, spaces here are cramped. Single Rooms are narrow; each is just enough room for a single bed and a few pieces of furniture: a fold-down desk cleverly makes use of the little space, but there is no wardrobe to store clothing. The general room decor is generic, with dark-brown carpeting and bedcovers. Also typical of Tokyo are the tiny bathrooms fitted with small shower/tub combos and electronic toilets. The Deluxe Twin Rooms offer more space, fold-out sofas, and bigger bathrooms with full-sized bathtubs. All rooms are equipped with air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and electric kettles. Slippers, toiletries, and hairdryers are handy extras. Note that some past guests have complained of the lingering smell of cigarette smoke in nonsmoking rooms.

Features

On-site restaurant with unimpressive breakfast service, coin laundry, and free Wi-Fi

Like many mid-range hotels in Tokyo, Shibuya Tobu Hotel offers few extra features. The on-site restaurant serves a basic breakfast for an extra fee, but past guests report that the food is mediocre. The hotel also has coin-operated laundry facilities and drink vending machines, both of which are common amenities in Japanese hotels. A dry-cleaning service is available for a fee, and luggage storage is free. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel.
