Located on Ariake island in Tokyo Bay, Hotel Sunroute Ariake is the closest hotel to the massive Tokyo Big Sight exhibition center. This 790-room, mid-range hotel is geared toward business travelers and conference-goers much more than tourists, but its "good neighbor" affiliation with Tokyo Disney -- it operates free shuttles back and forth to the theme park -- brings in a good share of leisure travelers too. Its affordable rooms have a contemporary look, but some show significant wear around the edges, and Standard Rooms are cramped. Other than an on-site restaurant and bar, there's little here of note besides the foot massagers that come with every room.
Scene
Contemporary convention center hotel
Washed in natural light from floor-to-ceiling windows, the Hotel Sunroute Ariake's lobby is a large open space that has all the hallmarks of a convention center hotel. The front desk is set up for big groups, with a rope line to corral guests arriving for a strict check-in time. An open stone-and-glass staircase leads to a mezzanine, where the hotel has its own event space.
Location
On Ariake island in Tokyo Bay
The hotel is located on Ariake island in Tokyo Bay, near a large public park and the waterfront of Tokyo Bay. It's within walking distance of Tokyo Big Site, host to international trade shows, exhibitions, and conventions. Major shopping and entertainment on neighboring Odaiba Island is a short train or bus ride (less than 15 minutes) away, and the hotel runs a free shuttle bus to Tokyo Disneyland. Airport limousine bus service to Narita and Haneda airports is available for a fee -- Haneda is 30 minutes away by public bus.
Rooms
Contemporary rooms with humidifiers and foot massagers
The hotel's 790 rooms are clean and contemporary, though many show wear and tear, with scuffs on walls and worn edges on the furnishings. Standard Rooms are on the small side, with a small sitting area and a desk, while Economy Rooms are too cramped to fit anything but a desk next to twin beds or a single double. Larger Superior Rooms have more breathing space, and some have sitting areas with small sofas. Mini-fridges, humidifiers, and air purifiers come with all rooms, along with foot massagers. Bathrooms have the ubiquitous multi-function toilets with bidet features, and shower/tub combos with handheld showerheads. Toiletries are provided.
Features
Restaurant and bar, convenience store, conference space, and free shuttles to Tokyo Disney
Patio restaurant and bar serves Western food and Japanese standards like tempura and udon, as well as a breakfast buffet for an extra fee. There is also a Lawson convenience store on the second floor that sells snacks and drinks. The hotel has its own 3,800 square-foot conference hall, which can be broken into three smaller meeting rooms, as well as a 24-hour business center, but the business center sits under the lobby's staircase with standing-room-only computers set into a shelf on the wall. Shuttles operate to both Haneda and Narita airports for a fee, and the hotel runs free shuttles several times a day (reservations required) to Tokyo Disney Resort.
