Bottom Line

The two-and-a-half-pearl Hotel Hokke Club Asakusa is conveniently located near the Asakusa subway station, and is walking distance to the popular Senso-ji Temple. Its 186 modern but somewhat spartan guest rooms have desks, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, air purifiers, kettles, and free Wi-Fi, but some lack windows and views. Bathrooms are traditional Japanese-style, with washing stations and separate bathtubs. Facilities are limited, with no restaurant/bar or fitness center, but breakfast is served for an extra fee, and there's a guest laundry room and vending machines. It's not easy to beat these rates in the neighborhood, but for a little more, the Richmond Hotel Asakusa adds a restaurant and is located even closer to the Senso-Ji Temple grounds.

Scene

Basic, comfortable hotel in a modern city tower for solo travelers

Hotel Hokke Club Asakusa, which opened in 2015, occupies a narrow, 11-story tower with limited views from its few street-facing windows. It has an long entryway with an attractive stone wall that opens into a bright but windowless lobby, with polished, stone-tiled floors and walls, and an interesting checkerboard ceiling. The long reception desk is lit from within and reminiscent of traditional Shoji screens, with a pretty wood and rice paper backdrop. Three square stools are set in front of it, and the minimalist space has only a small cushioned bench to sit on. Most guests here are solo travelers as opposed to couples or families.

Location

Within walking distance to the iconic Senso-ji Temple and near public transit

The hotel is located in Taito one block from the Sumida River, close to the iconic Senso-Ji Temple, which is about an 11-minute walk away. It's on a busy yet bland street, but this is a bustling area with many restaurants, bars, and supermarkets within walking distance. There's good transportation links nearby too, with Asakusa subway and train station a short six-minutes away on foot. Tokyo Skytree is a 13-minute ride away on the Asakusa line and there are direct trains from here to Haneda and Narita International Airports, about 51 minutes and 75 minutes away, respectively.

Rooms

Simple modern rooms with mini-fridges and traditional bathrooms

Decor in guest rooms at Hotel Hokke Club Asakusa is a bit somber, but it isn't unpleasant, and overall they maintain a polished look. Standard rooms have twin beds that come in two different sizes (one is just a few inches wider and may be referred to as a small double bed) with reading lamps and alarm clocks. Small built-in desks, or little tables with cushioned chairs are the only places to sit. Upgraded rooms have two twin beds or one double bed, along with seating areas that have small couches and tables. All units are air-conditioned, with 32-inch flat-screens, air purifier/humidifiers, electric kettles, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi, but some rooms have windows covered or made of frosted glass, and none have views. The bathrooms have separate vanities, and wet rooms that have traditional Japanese tubs next open washing stations with handheld showerheads. Pump-dispenser toiletries and hairdryers are included.

Features

Limited to a breakfast room, vending machines, laundry services, and free Wi-Fi

There isn't much in the way of features at this property, but there's a Japanese and Western breakfast buffet available for a fee, served in a contemporary breakfast room at tables with cushioned benches. The hotel also has vending machines, a self-service laundry room, and laundry and dry cleaning services for an extra charge. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
