Bottom Line

Located far from town in the rain forest between two secluded beaches, Viking Natures Resort is a quirky place that combines rustic simplicity with a bit of jungle luxury. Its rooms range from huts with mosquito nets and outdoor showers to picturesque villas made entirely of local wood and bamboo. Few have air-conditioning, and the bugs can be an issue inside and out. Amenities are slim apart from the beaches, but couples looking to rough it (in a "glamping" sense) away from the crowds can find a romantic setting here, especially in the pricier villas.

Viking Natures Resort

Scene

Rustic bungalows in the jungle provide a secluded, romantic vibe.

Despite the resort's access to two small private beaches, most of Viking Natures Resort spans the jungle between them, with traditional wood and bamboo bungalows that look right at home in the thick greenery. Carved wooden statues decorate the grounds, where guests can find the main building and an open-air lobby off the beach.

Location

On private beaches far from town

Situated on a plot of jungle that juts out into Ton Sai Bay, Viking Natures Resort is surrounded by natural rain forest on Ko Phi Phi Don ("Ko" means island in the native language). There's nothing within (reasonable) walking distance and it's a 30-minute trek from town. Public ferries leave from Krabi on the mainland (and from Phuket) and deliver travelers to Tonsai Pier, from which guests can walk, or travel by another boat along the coast, to the resort. Expect a three-hour trip, including a 30-minute drive from Krabi Airport to Krabi Pier (also known as Klong Jilad Pier). Phi Phi Don is the largest of the Phi Phi Islands, with attractions on the smaller Ko Phi Phi Le, like Maya Beach and Viking Cave, accessible by boat.

Rooms

Wide variety of rustic bungalows with private balconies

Though varying greatly in size and decor, all 63 of the resort's rooms are made of wood and bamboo, with thatched roofs and balconies with hammocks. There are several types, with the standard bungalows designed like traditional one-room huts with simple bathrooms and outdoor showers; some include added rooftop patios. Most of these lack views of the ocean as they are the deepest in the jungle. Pricier tiers get progressively larger, and include additional amenities like mini-fridges and flat-screen TVs; they also have en-suite showers. The so-called Tree Huts on the beach are high off the sand on stilts, and situated so that water washes up below them during high tide. Villas at the top end have two bedrooms each, and large living areas with rich wood furnishings and beautiful decorative lamps. Few rooms here have air-conditioning, with most relying only on ceiling and standing fans.

Features

Two beaches, kayaks, a restaurant and bar, and on-site massage

The resort has direct access to two different beaches (with some bungalows directly on the sand), and two other beaches are within walking distance. Kayaking and snorkeling gear are available on-site, and guests can book tours around the island in the resort's long-tail boats. There's no spa or pool, but Thai massages can be had under palm shades on the beach. The restaurant and bar serves Thai and international cuisine, with breakfast included in most of the upgraded room rates.
