Overview

Pros
  • Secluded hilltop location away from the crowds

  • Excellent views of Chalok Baan Khao Bay and the beach

  • Short (if steep) walk down to the beach and village

  • Romantic Pool Villas have incredible views

  • Charming seaside bar and restaurant

  • Free breakfast

Cons
  • Getting back from beach and restaurant involves a very steep hill climb

  • No spa services

  • Garden View Cottages are a bit plain

  • Pool Villas are more than three times the price of the cottages

  • Road in involves quite a long steep detour

Bottom Line

The View Point Resort certainly lives up to its name. The location high atop a hill at the end of Chalok Baan Khao Beach makes for great views and plenty of privacy, and it is a short (steep) stroll down to the sand and village. The restaurant here is quite atmospheric, set at the bottom of the hill next to the sea. Cottages have charming, rustic Thai stye, but note that cheapest cottages overlook the gardens; you'll have to upgrade for sunset views over the sea. The Pool Villas are the best, but priciest, bet. Arriving to the resort by road is a twisting, torturous trek, but for some guests, that's all part of the adventure. It may also be worth considering the similarly priced Chintakiri Resort, which also has great views.

Scene

Romantic and peaceful spot for couples

The View Point is a small property, but the cottages and villas are spread out, so guests have plenty of privacy. The long, steep walk down to the beach and restaurant also helps ensure a crowd-free environment, and guests hardly have to see each other at all. The bar area, which has floor loungers on the lawn by the sea, is a relaxed spot, and most guests come here for a low-key escape. It is a popular spot for young couples in search of romance and quiet. There aren't too many rooms that can accommodate families, and the long trek up from the beach will deter those with little ones.

Location

Perched on top of a hill overlooking the sea and beach

The View Point lives up to its moniker, thanks to its location right on top of a hill overlooking both the sea and all of Chalok Baan Khao Bay and beach. Access to the beach is short and very steep, down an almost vertical driveway. The beach by the restaurant is not very pleasant; one needs to walk around the bay to find white sand and space, not to mention the afternoon sun. The road access in is winding and tortuous, with some sections of broken pavement, making the resort seem farther away then it really is. Extra time is needed for getting to the ferry pier in Mae Haad for departures. Transfers to and from the pier are not included in the rate, but can be booked through the resort for an extra charge.

Rooms

Ranging from average Garden View Cottages to luxurious Pool Villas

The Garden View Cottages here are fine for the price is not particularly special, with dim lighting, odd, dated wall texturing, and plain decor; only the thatch roofs and concrete bathrooms add some rustic charm. It's well worth upgrading to the Sea View Cottage for the water views. All cottages have big wooden decks, and some have odd showers that are integrated into the rest of the bathroom, with just a showerhead and drain near the toilet (a couple have more appealing outdoor showers). Amenities include minibars, coffeemakers, and air-conditioning, but no Wi-Fi.

The Pool Villas are an entirely different experience; they look -- and are priced like -- they belong to a different resort. They were built with natural materials and thatched roofs, and have plenty of outdoor space and light. The completely private pools with knockout sea and sunset views are the obvious highlight. For the money, though, guests could easily book rooms at a luxury resort -- though perhaps not a room of this caliber. If a luxury room is more important than luxury resort features and services, these may well be worth the cost.

Features

Romantic seaside restaurant and bar

Yes, guests must walk back up the hill to their rooms after dining the View Point Restaurant, but coming here is worth the subsequent climb. The resort's restaurant and bar sit right out on the bay, looking back at all the lights of Chalok Baan Khao. Especially nice are the beanbag loungers set on the lawn for sunset cocktails; the scene is about as chilled-out as it gets in these parts. Pool Villa guests can get room service. Breakfast is free, and free Wi-Fi is available near reception. The View Point has a free-form pool, but no other facilities, and no spa services. For a similarly priced property, consider Chintakiri Resort; for a beach massage hut, consider Charm Churee Villa.
