Scene

Boutique hotel with simple, mostly modern style on Railay's quieter east side

In a part of Krabi that's packed with bland mid-range options and outdated traditional properties, the Railay Princess makes a nice first impression. Guests arrive at this resort after a boat trip from Ao Nam Mao Pier. A long wooden front desk spans one wall of the large, open lobby with a tile floor and big columns. Modern wicker seating with bright orange cushions provides places for guests to sit, a nod to the restrained, but colorful design ethos found throughout the property. Given its small stature and location on Railay's quieter eastern side, it's no surprise that the vibe here is low-key and relaxed. Most on-site activities center on the two outdoor pools, though the atmosphere is never noisy. The hotel draws couples, though a few families and some small groups of friends make their way here as well.

Location

On Railay's east side, close to the pier and a 10-minute walk to beach

This resort is located in the middle of the eastern side of the Railay Isthmus, about a 15-minute boat ride from Krabi town. It's close to the pier and is surrounded by other hotels and resorts. Although this side of the peninsula does not have beaches, Phranang Cave Beach is a short walk from the hotel, and Railay Beach on the western side of the peninsula can be reached in about 10 minutes on foot. A few eateries and bars also are within walking distance, as well as convenience stores. The hotel is accessible only by boat, and it provides van and boat transfers from the airport in Krabi for a fee. It's about a 45-minute drive to the airport from the pier once back on the mainland.

Rooms

Spacious, sharp rooms with flat-screen TVs, minibars, and furnished balconies or terraces

The spacious rooms are offered in Superior, Deluxe, and Grand Deluxe categories. Decor is modern and minimal, but generally fresh, with clean-lined wood and rattan furniture, tile floors, and simple drapery. In some, accent walls of bright blue or green with red bed toppers and pillows add color to the otherwise white spaces. Higher-category rooms have additional details like canopy beds, and handsome sketches and Thai art hang on the walls. Standard features include flat-screen TVs, minibars, air-conditioning, coffeemakers, and safes. Bathrooms are modern, and hairdryers, robes, slippers, and toiletries are provided. In Deluxe Rooms, sliding glass doors lead to the bathroom, which has a separate tub and shower. Superior Rooms have a shower only. Baths in Grand Deluxe Rooms have a window between the shower and sleeping area. Balconies and terraces are furnished, with views of the cliffs, the bay, the pool, or the resort. It's worth noting that many guests have complained of sewage smells on occasion, possibly due to plumbing.

Features

Two outdoor pools, spa, fitness center, and restaurant serving free breakfast

The two outdoor pools are both lovely spaces with tropical vegetation all around and large decks with lounge chairs. There are no umbrellas, but trees provide shade. One pool overlooks the bay and the other the cliffs, making for generally lovely views from either location. Both have whirlpools. The small fitness center offers a couple of cardio machines, a weight-training machine, and free weights in front of large windows. A flat-screen TV helps entertain. Massage and body treatments are available in the open-air spa, which is set up next to a tranquil pond ringed by palm trees. The resort's restaurant serves all meals, including a free breakfast buffet that features cooked-to-order eggs and numerous other options. Guests can dine inside in a bright, open space or out on the terrace by the water and shaded by palm trees. Food gets mostly solid marks and includes Thai and international dishes. Drinks are also available, and it's worth noting that monkeys can be an issue, especially around food. There's a kids' club with toys and games for those traveling with children, though families aren't frequent guests here. The hotel can also arrange laundry services. Wi-Fi is free throughout the resort and airport transfers can be arranged for a fee.
