Bottom Line

Many guests are drawn to the upscale Novotel Samui Resort Chaweng Beach Kandaburi by the size of its 181 modern rooms -- especially the huge bathrooms with deep tubs and rainfall showers. At the north end of Chaweng Beach, the resort is split into hillside and beach-side sections intersected by a busy road. Breakfast is free and the hotel has three restaurants and two bars, plus there are plenty of restaurants
within walking distance. A spa is complemented by a modern fitness center, which is not a common feature at resorts in the area. Guests may want to compare rates with Nora Buri Resort & Spa, an upscale beachfront property that operates a free local shuttle, though rates there are higher.

Scene

Upscale beachfront resort divided into hillside and beachside sections

Now a member of the Novotel chain, this property makes a fairly grand first impression, especially when compared to many of the humbler, smaller hotels in Chaweng. However, it's divided by a busy road into two sections -- hillside and beachside -- that won't make every visitor happy. That fact aside, the grounds are gorgeous, full of tropical
plants, palm trees, and beautiful water features like a water garden filled
with lily pads and a whimsical fountain made of elephant statues. Sharp geometric angles coexist with the more fluid lines of Thai architecture, while the white buildings have a certain stately look that contributes to this hotel's upscale vibe. Guests staying on the hillside must cross the busy road to get to the hotel's lovely stretch of beach, where lounge chairs are lined up facing the sea. Overall, chic interiors and beautiful grounds -- coupled with direct access to the beach -- attract couples and families seeking a sun-filled vacation.

Location

Northern Chaweng Beach, within walking distance of plenty of restaurants

The resort is located at the north end of Chaweng Beach, slightly removed from the sometimes chaotic center of town. There are
plenty of restaurants within walking distance, and the hotel is a 15- to 20-minute
walk -- or five-minute drive -- to the nightclubs and bars in central Chaweng town. From here, it's only a 10-minute drive to one of Koh Samui's major photo ops, the Big Buddha. The
center of Muay Thai boxing in Koh Samui, Hat Chaweng Boxing Stadium, is a six-minute
drive away. Samui International Airport can be reached in about five minutes by car, while ferries to the mainland depart from the west side of the island in Nathon, a 45-minute drive from the Novotel.

Rooms

Spacious, contemporary rooms with huge bathrooms and private balconies

Contemporary rooms are spacious with especially huge bathrooms that are furnished with basin sinks, massive white marble vanities, deep tubs, and separate rainfall showers. Rust orange accent walls and ceiling panels combine with rich hardwood floors create a warm vibe, and all rooms have handsome wooden furniture that includes work desks and wardrobes. Beds are framed by large statement headboards and flanked by wooden panels and nightstands that are illuminated by antique-modern pendant lamps (though the light-up lotus embedded in the headboard looks a bit unintentionally vintage). Family Rooms include bunk beds. Amenities include minibars stocked with soda and beer, electric kettles for coffee or tea, flat-screen TVs, work desks, air-conditioning, and free Wi-Fi. Slippers and umbrellas are provided. All rooms have balconies, though only some offer beach views.

Features

Beach access, three resturants and two bars, two outdoor pools, and spa on-site

The hotel is located directly on a flat, sandy beach with a few lounge chairs, though beach space is variable depending on the season and tide. On-site dining options include three restaurants offering regional and international food as well as a pool bar and beach bar serving snacks and drinks. A free breakfast is also provided with breakfast options that include Asian and Western dishes. Guests report that food and drinks at the resort are expensive when compared to nearby restaurants and bars. The hotel has two outdoor pools as well as a fitness center with exercise machines and hand weights. There's also a spa offering massages. Wi-Fi is free. Also, the hotel does not offer airport transfers for free.
