Bottom Line

Bhu Nga Thani Resort and Spa, with 60 rooms and villas, is a four-pearl property tucked into the palms on the eastern side of Railay, a 10-minute walk to Railay Beach and only reachable via boat transfer. Modern rooms have minimalist Thai decor with balconies or patios and garden and/or partial sea views -- many also have soaking tubs. An outdoor pool and an open-air restaurant overlook the Andaman Sea and the area's signature karsts, and the hotel has a spa and a sparsely equipped gym that's open 24 hours as well. For a hotel with direct beach access, travelers may want to compare prices at Railay Village Resort.

Scene

Modern, open-air hotel with attractive, palm-lined grounds

Long-tail boats transport guests to the upscale Bhu Nga Thani Resort and Spa, located on the east side Railay amid palm trees and mangroves. Wooden planked walkways, illuminated by lanterns, lead over koi ponds to the lobby, while open-air buildings constitute most of the architecture. The walkways could use a fresh coat paint, but the hotel's overall Thai-minimalist design is breezy, modern, and chic. The atmosphere here is exotic -- monkeys occasionally visit and the backdrops to many views are Krabi's signature limestone karsts and cliffs. The vibe here is laid back, and the hotel attracts families and couples, though prices can be expensive during peak season, as they are throughout the region.

Location

On the east side of Railay, within walking distance to the beach

This hotel is situated on the east side of Railay, a location that has a bohemian vibe that draws backpackers to some of the lower-end hotels in the area. There’s no beach on this side of Raily -- when the tide is low a massive expanse of somewhat muddy mangrove shore is exposed that can be a delight for finding shells and sea life -- but it’s a 10-minute walk to Railay Beach on the west side of the peninsula. There are a few eateries within five minutes on foot, but not much in the way of nightlife, and most travelers come to Railay for the rock climbing and water-sports activities. Phranang Beach, Princess Lagoon, and Princess Cave are all also within walking distance. Boat trips from Railay East into Krabi town can take up to 45 minutes and only depart when full (the hotel also runs its own boats), and connections from Railay East are also available to Ao Nang and Koh Lanta. The closest airport is in Krabi, which is about 25 minutes by car from Krabi town's main pier.

Rooms

Stylish and modern, with balconies and patios, plus villas with private pools

The style in the 60 guest rooms is modern and stylish, embracing a Thai-influenced minimalism with black, white, and red decor. Rooms have polished off-white stone tile floors, white walls, dark wood furniture with simple lines, and a few Buddhist-inspired art objects tastefully set throughout. Floor-to-ceiling patio doors, windows seats, and large windows beside bathtubs let natural light flow through the rooms, which are spacious and start at 47 square meters (506 square feet). Daybeds are set on balconies or patios, which overlook the gardens and/or the sea. Fresh fruit and free bottled water are a nice touch. Bathrooms are spacious across the board, with large vanities. Deluxe Elegant Rooms have soaking tubs in addition to walk-in showers, while Deluxe Grand Room feature soaking tubs with a waterfall. For more privacy and charm, there are thatched-roof Pool Villas with pools and soaking tubs. The two-level Presidential Villa also has a pool, two bedrooms with bathrooms, living/dining room, and a kitchen. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, DVD players, air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, minibars, safes, bathrobes, slippers, hairdryers, umbrellas, and kettles. Sea view rooms are available, though the view of the water will be over rooftops and trees.

Features

Outdoor swimming pool, open-air restaurant, fitness center, and full-service spa

Set against Krabi's limestone cliffs, the outdoor pool offers lovely views of the surrounding dramatic landscape. Beside the pool is the open-air Bhu Nga Sari Restaurant, serving breakfast, lunch, and dinner in an open-air dining room and terrace that overlooks the sea. Breakfasts feature a la carte or buffet options, but are not included in room rates. Large windows in the gym provide a lot of natural light, but the space is small and there only a few cardio and weight machines. The full-service spa offers male and female steam rooms, massage and beauty treatments in pavilions, and an outdoor soaking tub. Handcrafted wares can be purchased in a small gift shop. A meeting room on-site fits 50 people and a business corner is available, but most guests here aren’t corporate travelers. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel and there's a DVD library from which guests can borrow movies to watch in their rooms.
