This small, 17-room boutique resort overlooking the beautiful sea and Nang Yuan Island below is a fabulous, secluded romantic getaway. It's built into into a hillside, and almost the last resort up a mountain road toward the northern end of the island. Views from the infinity-edge pool are hard to top anywhere on Koh Tao. The resort's Ocean Lounge is as romantic as they come, perfect for sunset cocktails and gourmet candlelit dinners. Rooms have attractive (if not quite luxurious) Thai decor and free Wi-Fi; some have private pools. The small size means that guests can expect plenty of personalized staff attention. Just note that the resort is not on the beach.
Scene
Romantic, charming, and very laid-back
The Aminjirah oozes romance. The amazing ocean views are the star here, and can be enjoyed from the chic infinity-edge pool or by sunset or candlelight from the Ocean View Lounge restaurant. The resort attracts nature lovers and couples looking for some private bliss. There are a couple of larger rooms suitable for families and groups, but the secluded location and intimate size of the property make this much better suited for a couples' retreat. There aren't really any hang-out spots other than the pool area, so most guests stick to their rooms, some of which have private pools and most of which have sea views. It's pretty quiet up here on the mountaintop, and while the pool and bar can get busy during happy hour or sunset, this is a spot for quiet relaxation rather than staying up late.
Location
On top of a hill high above the sea with sweeping views and a steep climb from town
The resort sits at the northern end of Koh Tao, up a steep mountain road from Sairee Beach. While it isn't all that far from town, the steep climb up here deters most from walking, and the fact that this property is one of only a few resorts in this area makes the environment very quiet and seemingly more distant than it is. There is no beach access but the views from the infinity-edge pool of the entire bay and west side of the island help make up for it. The resort does provide transfers from the ferry pier, which actually isn't more than a 10- to 15-minute drive away.
Rooms
The best rooms have private pools or terraces with superb views.
Rooms here have attractive Thai silks and traditional Thai decor styles in the design and bedding. Expect intricately carved furniture, bold red fabric accents, tile floors, and big bathrooms with walk-in showers. They're perfectly pleasant, if not quite luxurious. Amenities include free WiFi, air-conditioning, satellite TVs, DVD players, stocked minibars, and robes. The romantically included will likely love the Ocean Sunset Rooms and Ocean View Pool Villas. Most rooms offer great views, and the rooms that feature terraces or private pools are particularly enjoyable for whiling away slow afternoons. Because of the resort's removed location, guests do spend a fair amount of time in their rooms, so it's definitely worth upgrading if it's in the budget.
Features
The Ocean Lounge is one of Koh Tao's most romantic spots, and serves up great food and drinks.
This small resort doesn't have many features. There isn't a gym or a spa, but the tiny Ocean Lounge bar and restaurant sits right next to the charming infinity-edge pool; both overlook the entire west coast of Koh Tao as well as Nang Yuan island to the north. Needless to say, sunsets and candlelit dinners here are wonderful, and the restaurant is truly above average with some real gourmet standouts like bacon and blue cheese hamburgers and ultra-thick blueberry shakes.
