Bottom Line

The adult-only Spring Arona (aka Sensimar Arona Gran Hotel & Spa) is an upscale resort located a short walk from a small beach in Los Cristianos. The hotel underwent extensive renovations in 2015-16, and all 391 rooms have stylish contemporary decor, wood floors, a soft neutral palette, and modern amenities such as flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and minibars. Although popular with older couples (especially in the winter), the property has a lively atmosphere thanks to daily entertainment around the pools and evening shows at the bar. A small spa offers treatment cabins and a hydrotherapy area, and the fitness center is well-equipped with a variety of machines. Travelers looking for something smaller may want to consider the H10 Big Sur, which is also adult-only and generally cheaper.

Scene

Large adult-only hotel popular with older couples

Located in a quiet part of Los Cristianos, not too far from the center and the beach, the Spring Arona caters to older couples seeking a hassle-free vacation by the pool. The hotel occupies a large oceanfront plot surrounded by other hotels and private apartment blocks, and the building’s "C" shape allows for at least partial ocean views from most rooms. The property underwent top-to-bottom renovations in 2015, and now has stylish interiors in a muted gray-and-white palette. The lobby has a huge central atrium with two types of marble, and rampant greenery hanging from each floor's walkway. Dove-gray and brown couches offer plenty of seating, but the reception area looks more like a transit area than a place where guests would want to hang out. The outdoors, however, are more appealing and inviting, featuring a large central pool deck complete with three pools and lots of loungers, and small patches of grass with towering palm trees. The atmosphere is generally lively and busy, especially in the winter, when groups of Northern European seniors flock to the area looking for some sun.

Location

In a residential area a short walk from the beach and a few restaurants

The hotel is located in a quiet residential area on the eastern edge of Los Cristianos. There are a few hotels around, and a handful of restaurants can be found within a 10-minute walk, but this neighborhood is a little away from the city center action. There is a small black-sand beach a five-minute walk away, but Playa de las Vistas, located a 15-minute walk, is larger and nicer. The area around Playa de Los Cristianos is home to dozens of restaurants and bars, and there are plenty of other options in livelier Playa de las Americas, located a 10-minute drive away. Local attractions such as Jungle Park and Siam Park can be reached in about 10 minutes by car. It is a 15-minute drive to the airport.

Rooms

Contemporary rooms with free Wi-Fi, balconies, and flat-screen TVs

The hotel's 391 rooms were fully renovated in 2015-16 and now feature contemporary decor in a muted gray-and-white palette, and elegant wood floors. The neutral color scheme may be a little bland to some, but large padded headboards, accent pillows with plant motifs, and minimalist furniture are stylish touches. Large nature photos add some color. Standard amenities include free Wi-Fi (although it can be spotty), large flat-screen TVs, electric kettles, minibars, and safes. Pool towels, bathrobes, and slippers are provided, and air-conditioning is individually controlled. Spacious balconies are furnished with a couple of cushioned loungers, and most offer at least partial ocean views. Sleek bathrooms have large sink areas, shower/tub combos or walk-in showers, backlit mirrors, wall-mounted hairdryers, and an array of toiletries. There are also five accessible rooms available.

Features

Three pools and a pretty spa, plus a buffet restaurant and bar

The Spring Arona Gran has three pools, all heated in the winter, and surrounded by plenty of cushioned loungers and umbrellas. The lifeguard regularly walks around the pools removing any towels that have been left unattended on loungers for hours, which means loungers are generally easier to find here than at other resorts in the area. Daily entertainment around the pool focuses on fitness activities, and at night live shows and piano performances are offered at the main bar. The poolside bar offers a decent a la carte food menu, while breakfast and dinner are served buffet-style in the hotel’s main restaurant. Outdoor seating is available in both. The fitness center features high-end cardio and strength-training machines, in addition to hosting group classes daily. For a small fee, guests have access to the hotel’s upscale spa, complete with a hydrotherapy area, a relaxation room, and several treatment rooms. The hotel also features a small bowling alley and meeting spaces
