Bottom Line

Playa Olid is a family-friendly mid-range hotel located a 10-minute walk from the beach. The property has 202 studios and one-bedroom apartments with flat-screen TVs, fully stocked kitchenettes, and balconies or terraces. Most units have received top-to-bottom renovations and are contemporary and comfortable -- but non-renovated rooms are somewhat drab and in need of urgent updates. The buffet restaurant offers a good spread, and the two pools (although small) are pleasant spots for lazy days in the sun. There is little else in the way of amenities, but for an inexpensive family vacation near the beach, Playa Olid is a good pick.

Scene

A mid-range hotel with two pools and kid-friendly amenities

This maze-like property features 202 apartments and studios housed in five buildings with lots of stairs and elevators. Decor is generic throughout, with basic furniture in common spaces, and a mix of contemporary and dated styles in rooms. The last major renovations were carried out in the early 2010s, but not all rooms received facelifts, and some are basic and tired. The grounds are average for a hotel in this price range; there are a few green areas, and the pool decks are on the small side. Iberostar Torviscas Playa also has dated rooms, but offers more on-site amenities and a location right on the beach for a similar price.

Location

On a hill a 10-minute walk from Fañabé Beach, and within walking distance to restaurants, bars, and shops

The hotel is located on a hill a short walk from restaurants, shops, and bars. Fañabé, one of Costa Adeje’s largest and most famous beaches, is a five- to 10-minute walk away, and other somewhat quieter beaches can be found walking along the boardwalk in either direction. Guests can sign up for boat excursions and water sports at Puerto Colón, located a five-minute drive away (or a 20-minute walk along the boardwalk). Playa de las Américas and Los Cristianos, both known for their nice beaches, can be reached by car in under 10 minutes, or between 15 and 25 by bus. There is a bus stop right outside the property. The airport is a 15-minute drive away.

Rooms

Renovated apartments are contemporary and appealing -- but non-renovated units are in need of updates

The hotel has a total of 202 units, including 183 one-bedroom apartments and 19 studios. All feature fully equipped kitchenettes, dining areas, living areas (complete with sofa beds in apartments), and balconies or terraces. Most units were renovated in the early 2010s and have contemporary (if generic) decor in a dark palette with pops of white. Brown accent walls and matching bed runners, pillows, and artwork make spaces modern, while white furniture adds a fresh look and some light. Non-renovated units, however, are overall dated and a little drab, with basic wooden furniture, old-fashioned upholstering, tired kitchens, and average bathrooms. Flat-screen TVs, fans, and shower gel in large wall-mounted dispensers are all standard amenities, but the rooms lack air-conditioning. Free Wi-Fi is available in the lobby, but there is a fee for in-room Internet access.

Features

Two pools, kid-friendly amenities, entertainment, and a buffet restaurant

The hotel features two main pools -- both on the small side, but nice enough for a dip and sunbathing. The main pool is generally busy with families, but the other one is somewhat quieter. The kiddy pool is connected to the main pool by a bridge, and is gated for safety. The poolside bar serves drinks and small snacks throughout the day, and the lobby bar has outdoor space and an average drinks menu. The hotel has a buffet restaurant known for offering a decent spread for all three meals, although it can get repetitive; all-inclusive options are available. The kids’ club is basic and feels like an afterthought, but there is entertainment for children as well as for adults throughout the day. Free Wi-Fi is available in the lobby, although there have been complaints of slow and spotty service.
