Scene
Small family-run property with historic roots and bubbly staff
Rothschild 71 is a must for any history or architecture buffs visiting Tel Aviv. Not only was it one of Rothschild Boulevard’s original buildings, it is the only building from the first three streets of Tel Aviv that remains under its original family’s ownership. Architecture aficionados can marvel at its classic Bauhaus design, while history enthusiasts will delight in staying in a UNESCO-protected hotel that originally started as one of the city’s first medical clinics in the 1930s. While the hotel may be historic on the outside, the inside is classic-contemporary and charming. It has a sunken lobby living room area, artwork from contemporary Israeli artist Ronai Aloni on the walls, and a large informational plaque on the wall commemorating Dr. Mosha Krieger and his wife -- the two original clinic owners. Today, their three grandchildren run the property and can be seen either playing the piano, sitting out on the courtyard high tops, or arranging the fresh flowers. It's also noteworthy to mention that the staff are consistently praised as excellent, upbeat, and genuine, and chosen predominately for their people skills; most, if not all, have no prior experience working in a hotel. Note that this hotel is only for guests ages 16 and up.
Location
Great location directly off Rothschild Boulevard
It’s easy to remember where to find this hotel since its name is its address. It’s also important to tell any cab drivers exactly which Rothschild hotel you need as there are a few, all only differentiated by the number on the end, along the street. The Rothschild 71 is well-located within walking distance to several of the trendy strip’s (and the city’s) best restaurants, cafes, and eateries. - Six-minute drive or 11-minute walk to Carmel Market
Rooms
Contemporary, quiet rooms with minibars and flip-flops; some with terraces and kitchens
All rooms are done in a contemporary, charming style that blends art, pops of color, and upscale furnishings beautifully. Sparser decor and more basic furniture leave the smaller Studio rooms looking less stylish than higher category rooms, but they're still attractive. Double-glazed windows and blackout storm shutters help keep out noise, light, and wind. Headboards are fashioned out of soft-focused canvas prints, minibar items like wine and granola bars are well-priced, and Nespresso machines, iPod docks, and kettles are available in every room. Bathrooms are modern with walk-in showers, Sea of Spa toiletries, bathrobes, and flip-flops that guests get to keep. However, no rooms have tubs. Bumping up to an Executive Suite gets you double the style and size, with an added cushioned seating area and long wet bar. Balconies and rollaway beds are available on request and availability. Residence Suites have either a full kitchen or a two-burner kitchenette with microwaves on request. These rooms are bargains when rented by the month at Studio rates. The Penthouse Suite is a dual-level unit with a living room and bedroom on the bottom floor and an additional living room and wet bar on the second floor that open up onto a private terrace with lounge chairs and a cafe table. The Rothschild Suite is the highest category and comes with a full kitchen, including an oven, plus a dining table for up to 12 and three balconies.
Features
Free beach bags, booze, and bike rentals, plus breakfast for a fee
The Rothschild 71 is a small hotel with limited public spaces. The hotel’s lobby area also functions as the reception, and is a popular place for guests to hang out and relax thanks to the free snacks, bubbly, beer, and 24-hour coffee and tea provided here. A sunken lounge area provides space to sit. Soft music plays in the background while guests wait to check in, take a break from exploring the city, or start the day with a free pastry selection and juice. The courtyard is quiet and unassuming, with a few contemporary wicker couches with slightly dirty cushions and glass-topped tables. A daily happy hour pops off in the lobby area with top-shelf liquors, snacks, wine, and other drinks, and it's popular with most guests. There’s also free bike rentals and Wi-Fi. Guest passes to a local gym are available, but you’ve got to ask. The gym is a three-minute walk away and it has machines, weights, and exercise classes. Cantina, the restaurant attached to the front of the hotel, serves an a la carte breakfast to hotel guests for a fee, though there are several good breakfast options nearby. Though not on the beach, the hotel provides free beach bags with sunscreen, towels, flip-flops, and games. The hotel also has 24-hour secured parking for a nightly fee.
