The Old Woolstore Apartment Hotel

As its name implies, the Old Woolstore Apartment Hotel is located in a refurbished wool storage facility from the 1890s. Divided into two wings -- one modern and one heritage -- the property has a generic, contemporary wing and a more character-filled older section decorated with old machinery and historic photographs. The lobby has exposed brick walls and a large photo mural of its previous wool factory life, but overall, spaces have little personality and are decorated in generic chain-hotel furnishings. The property is popular with both leisure and business travelers, thanks to its central location by the harbor and self-catering apartments.

Set a block from Hobart’s waterfront, this centrally located hotel is surrounded by restaurants, bars, and shops. It takes around a 15-minute walk to reach downtown or Salamanca Place and its vibrant market, plus the numerous surrounding restaurants, bars, and galleries. Botanical Gardens, Hobart Aquatic Center, Theatre Royal, and Constitution Dock are within about a 20-minute walk. Hobart International Airport is 25 minutes away by car or about an hour by public transport. On-site parking is available at an additional cost, however spaces are limited, so guests should reserve a spot in advance. 

The hotel offers both typical Hotel Rooms, and self-catering Studios and One- and Two-Bedroom Apartments. While spacious, rooms are lackluster and generic, outfitted with gray bedding and carpets, black throw pillows, white walls, and honey-tone wood furniture. Some rooms fittingly have colorful prints of balls of yarn to add personality. Desks are accompanied by red or white leather chairs, and those with sitting areas add leather sofas. Views are largely uninspired, and some are of a parking lot. A few rooms come with small Juliet balconies. 

All rooms feature air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs with DVD players, tea- and coffee-making facilities, free Wi-Fi, and minibars, but no safes. Studios and apartments have kitchenettes or full kitchens, respectively, with microwaves, stoves, ovens, and dishwashers, plus dining tables and washer/dryers. All bathrooms feature walk-in showers, hairdryers and toiletries, plus some have separate bathtubs. Set on the top floor, the open-plan Executive Spa Apartments come with large corner hot tubs. 

Situated off the lobby, the Baaa Bar features exposed brick walls, gray carpeting, and leather armchairs. The venue offers a range of Tasmanian wines and beers, as well as free coffee and tea for guests. Meanwhile, the sparsely decorated -- think gray-patterned carpet and red-leather chairs -- Stockmans Restaurant serves buffet breakfasts and dinners inspired by Tasmania’s fresh produce. Room service is available 24/7, but food receives mixed reviews. 

The small gym has free weights and limited cardio equipment, but there are no pool or spa here. Popular with business guests, the property has a range of indoor and outdoor meeting and event facilities with audiovisual equipment. There is also a business center with computers, and printing and faxing facilities. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
