Bottom Line

Just five-minutes from I-287 in Westchester County, the three-and-a-half-pearl Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Tarrytown is a notch above other chain properties. Spread out on 11 acres, the hotel has a soaring lobby with fireplaces, an indoor pool under an atrium, a fitness center and spa, and a restaurant with acclaimed food. The hotel also specializes in hosting weddings and corporate events, offering loads of event space and a 24-hour, full-service business center. Occasionally, guests complain about the trek to its 246 rooms due to its layout. And unfortunately the guest rooms can be bland with bathrooms on the small side, though all the basics are covered. Travelers who wish to tap into some of the historic, haunted spirit of Tarrytown (made famous by Washington Irving's ghost tales) might prefer the more idiosyncratic Castle Hotel & Spa in Tarrytown.

Scene

Upscale chain property popular for conferences, weddings, and sightseeing

Tourists descend on Westchester County along the Hudson River during autumn's leaf-peeping season, a time when this Doubletree is at its best. With its massive lobby, bookended by windows that are nearly floor to cathedral ceiling, and its fieldstone fireplaces, the hotel feels cozy and welcoming after a day out exploring the nearby rustic hamlets. The warm, chocolate chip cookie offered free to guests upon arrival adds to the hotel's homey vibe. The property looks and feels big with several buildings on an 11-acre campus. This spaciousness is good news for guests especially when a swarm of wedding-goers and conference attendees descend on the place. There are two ballrooms, one with borderline-garish carpeting and striking chandeliers, and another with polished wood floors and a large fireplace. The restaurant, Bistro Z, has high-backed chairs in country fabrics and warm wood tables under soft lighting with windows. There's also a bar/lounge with high-top tables and chairs, counter seating, and clusters of upholstered furniture. Most guests are either attending an event (a wedding or corporate function) or sightseeing in the area.

Location

Five minutes from I-287 in the Hudson Valley

This Doubletree hotel is in a historic area of New York State with winding country lanes and vistas of the Hudson River. It's a six-minute drive to Sleepy Hollow, the town made famous by Washington Irving's ghost tales. The verdant grounds of the Rockefeller estate and its riverside mansion known as Kykuit, are a seven-minute drive from the hotel. Tarrytown Music Hall is four minutes by car. Lyndhurst Mansion, a Gothic Revival home on 67 acres that once belonged to Jay Gould, is a two-minute drive. The hotel will provide a free shuttle to the closest Metro North train station stop, otherwise a five-minute drive. For award-winning fine dining at a working organic farm, guests could drive 11 minutes to Blue Hill at Stone Barns. Manhattan is a 43-minute drive without traffic or a 30-minute train ride on Metro North. Westchester Airport is a 15- to 20-minute drive from the hotel.

Rooms

Bland rooms but offering all the expected amenities

Rooms at this Doubletree by Hilton are spacious and have the amenities necessary for a decent hotel stay: Hilton makes sure there are different pillows and good mattresses; blackout drapes are included, and room service is 24 hours. The color scheme is all-white bedding with accent throws and pillows in dusky tones. In each room, there's free Wi-Fi, a safe, ironing facilities, a kettle for coffee and tea, a flat-screen TV, and a free daily newspaper. The bathrooms, while stylishly retro with polished-chrome hardware, big, pale yellow tiles, and pedestal sinks, are small. There are free toiletries, magnifying mirrors, and hairdryers. What the rooms lack is a dash of style or spirit; there's nothing remotely personalized or warm about the decor with its dark, inexpensive headboards and bureaus and the kind of anonymous artwork that emphasize the rooms chain-hotel status. One thing to note: The hotel does do a good job of providing handicapped-accessible accommodations.

Features

From welcome cookie to train-station transfer

This Doubletree by Hilton strives to offer a cozy, homey vibe with all its features from check in to check out. Arriving guests receive a free, warm chocolate chip cookie. There's free coffee and tea all day in the lobby, where guests will find fireplaces and leather chairs and sofas. The hotel reception desk is staffed 24-hours and will store luggage for free. A concierge is available as well. There's an on-site bar and a restaurant serving cuisine lauded by guests. The hotel has a fitness center and spa. It also has an indoor pool under a bright atrium. There are two ballrooms, 2,400 square feet and 2,230 square feet respectively, and several meeting rooms, all arrayed with audio-visual equipment. There's also a 24-hour business center. The hotel offers coin-operated laundry machines and will do dry cleaning for a fee. Pets are not allowed unless they're service animals. But the property is quite handicapped accessible. Staff will transport guests to the local Metro North railway stop for free or drive them to and from the airport for a fee.
