pueblo bar, an authentic New Mexican restaurant with adobe fireplaces, lovely
courtyards, and outdoor parking. Southwest furnishings are in rooms that also
feature flat-screen TVs, kiva fireplaces, and viga ceilings. But the lively bar
scene, while a major draw for some, can be noisy and bothersome to guests trying to rest. The nearby Hotel La Fonda de Taos, which doesn’t allow kids under eight, offers quieter rooms.

The adobe buildings on The Historic Taos Inn’s
property date back to the 1800s. The inn is recognized as a national and state
historic site. Original structural designs and touches have been
preserved and incorporated into modern conveniences. The old town well is now afountain in the charming lobby that features comfy leather sofas, two-floors of
impressive vigas, a stain-glassed dome, and skylight ceilings.Over the years
celebrities like Jessica Lange, Greta Garbo, and Robert Redford have reportedly
visited the inn and its popular restaurant and bar. Doc Martin Restaurant
was once the residence of Dr. Thomas Paul Martin, the first Taos physician. Low
arched doorways lead into the restaurant outfitted with booths and turquoise
blue chairs. Seating is also available in the lobby near a kiva fireplace.

On the borders of the historic Taos Plaza
The Historic Taos Inn is centrally located
in the heart of Taos, near most of its sights. Taos Plaza, a mere two-minute
walk from the inn, is surrounded by shops, restaurants, and bars. It’s also a
seven-minute car ride northeast to Taos Pueblo, a famed Native-American
landmark and UNESCO World Heritage site. Our Lady of Guadalupe
Church is a five-minute walk west while Rio Grande Gorge Bridge is a 17-minute
drive further out. Other nearby attractions include The Harwood Museum of Art, Kit Carson Home and Museum, and the Taos Mountain Balloon Rally.

Split between four buildings, the 44 guest units here offer a consummate New Mexican atmosphere, featuring Southwestern accents
and hand-carved furniture along with four-poster beds and hand-painted designs
by Taos artists. All spaces have air-conditioning and flat-screen TVs,
with some offering fireplaces. Most bathrooms have showers, though
some have bathtubs. Keep in mind that certain rooms have outdated
furnishings, DSL, and old-fashioned bathrooms, and rooms near the bar and road
can get noisy.

fountains, and patio furniture throughout the property. Trees, lawns, and
bursts of colorful flowers add to the cozy atmosphere. There’s also a gardenwith a small greenhouse and benches. A sitting room inside offers comfy (albeit
worn) furniture with free coffee, a piano, and an ATM. The lively Adobe Bar,
which the doctor’s wife opened in 1936, features log ceiling designs and
stained-glass windows along with a terrace. Live music and open mic nights draw
travelers and locals to the bar, which has been dubbed the “living room of
Taos.” And the on-site Doc Martin's Restaurant, open for lunch, brunch, and dinner, specializes in fresh local foods and offers an extensive wine list.
