Three-pearl Silver Cloud Inn is a decent base for travelers who don't mind being just outside the thick of the action in central Tacoma. Sitting right on the waterfront, it's a five- to 10-minute drive from Tacoma's downtown attractions -- and there's a handy free shuttle bus too. Many of the 90 rooms have great sea views, while Premier Kings have dual-aspect windows and in-room whirlpools. It's a place with a lot of useful little touches, such as gluten-free items at the free breakfast buffet, a free guest laundry room, and a weekly evening reception with drinks and snacks. However, train noise can be an issue. Travelers seeking a more central location and a modern finish should consider Hotel Murano in the city center, though rates will be higher.
Scene
Laid-back coastal hotel perched right on the water, with a wraparound boardwalk
Silver Cloud Inn is something of a rarity in this part of town, and sits on stilts right over the waters of Commencement Bay. It's wedged between two parks, and the location alone is a selling point (so long as you don't mind a drive to most noteworthy sights). The bright lobby makes an attractive, if simple, first impression, with comfortable sofas and sea views on either side. It's a shame that the the rear of the ground floor is used as a parking garage, so the best views aren't available from the shared spaces. However, the wraparound boardwalk behind the parking lot has seating and fantastic vistas over Puget Sound to the Olympic Mountains. There are few features here, and most guests use it as a laid-back place to unwind at night. Expect to see mostly couples, who are encouraged to mingle at weekly cocktail gatherings.
Location
Waterfront location, a five-minute drive to shopping and central Tacoma attractions
Silver Cloud Inn Tacoma is located outside of Tacoma's downtown hub and right on the waterfront, with great views of Puget Sound and Commencement Bay. It's on Ruston Way which is a main road that runs along the coast into town. The neighborhood is largely residential, but there are a handful of good restaurants within a 10-minute walk, as well as some pretty waterfront parks. Shopping and dining in the Proctor District is a five-minute drive from the hotel. The Stadium District, with its historic buildings and indie boutiques, is also about five minutes away by car. Driving to attractions downtown, like the Museum of Glass and the Tacoma Art Museum again takes about five minutes. The hotel runs a free shuttle around the local area. Point Defiance is a 10-minute drive, for the zoo and aquarium, plus Owen Beach. Getting to the airport is simplest by car, and the journey takes about 30 minutes.
Features
Free buffet breakfast, small gym, waterfront picnic tables, and a free shuttle bus downtown
Features aren't too numerous here, but what's on offer does add convenience to a stay (despite there being no lunch or dinner service on-site). The hotel serves a free buffet breakfast that includes gluten-free items, plus a good spread of hot and cold dishes. Room service is available from a local restaurant and there are picnic tables on the deck overlooking the water. There's a small fitness room with some cardio equipment and dumbbells, plus water and towels. Business guests can make use of the meeting room, which seats up to 12, and there's a PC in the lobby with a printer. Wi-Fi is free throughout. The hotel throws a weekly evening reception with free drinks and snacks that's a nice way to socialize at this otherwise sedate property. A shuttle bus to downtown attractions and the local area runs every 30 minutes. The guest laundry room is free to use, and the front desk can arrange dry cleaning services. Seasonal boat trips run from the hotel's dock.
