Scene

Warm and friendly bed-and-breakfast set in an old Edwardian house

TARA guest house is set in an old Edwardian house with decorative balconies and pretty gardens. The owners are pleased to tell guests the history of each room -- for example, one is an old doctor's office, while another was a maid's quarters. The guest house has a very cozy and homey atmosphere, and is full of quirky artwork, books, and furniture collected over the years. Guests are encouraged to eat breakfast communally, and the owners pride themselves on bringing different nationalities together and starting new friendships. There's also a shared living room that's a fine place to relax. Visitors here are primarily couples.

Location

In Enmore/Newtown, 25 minutes from downtown Sydney

Situated in Enmore, one of Sydney's inner-west suburbs near buzzing Newtown, the hotel is well off the traditional tourist track, but it's a fine spot for international guests looking to soak up some local flavor. The guest house sits on a main residential road that's a five-minute walk from Enmore Road, which is full of restaurants, bars, and boutique shops. Vibrant King Street is a 10-minute walk from the hotel, where there's a wide range of ethnically diverse restaurants, quirky shops, and live entertainment venues such as the Enmore Theatre. To reach Sydney's central districts, guests can take the bus from a stop that's a two-minute walk from property -- trips to the city center take about 25 minutes. For guests with cars, it’s a 10-minute drive to Darling Harbour and a 15-minute drive to the Sydney Opera House and Harbour Bridge. Sydney Airport is a 10-minute drive from the hotel.

Rooms

Large and individually decorated with artefacts from around the world

There are four guest rooms at the TARA, and each has been individually decorated and filled with interesting pieces collected by the owners during their extensive world travels. Features vary from room to room, but include marble fireplaces, double French doors, and four-poster beds -- there's even a piano in one room. The look is homey, but stylish, with wood floors, handsome patterned rugs and blankets, and collections of framed artwork on the white walls. Two of the rooms have their own bathroom, though the shared bathroom is contemporary and spacious, with white marble walls and black marble accents, along with soaking tubs and glass shower cubes. All rooms have free Wi-Fi, a flat-screen TV, DVD player, and Egyptian cotton sheets. Rooms at the front of the house may pick up some traffic noise, while those at the back get more sunlight and overlook the garden.

Features

Freebies include breakfast, Wi-Fi, and airport transfers

Being a bed-and-breakfast, guests can’t expect the same facilities as a hotel when staying here. However, the owners do go out of their way to provide conveniences. Transport to and from the airport is free of charge, as is Wi-Fi, and a fabulous home cooked breakfast. Breakfast is served in the elegant kitchen and ingredients are sourced locally when possible. There's also a homey guest lounge and a garden for guests to enjoy.
