With a central Sydney location and free Wi-Fi, the upper-middle-range Metro Hotel on Pitt is a good choice for tourists as well as business travelers who don't need meeting facilities. The 119 rooms have flat-screen TVs and big walk-in showers, and some were renovated in 2014. There's also a restaurant that's open for all meals, except on Sundays, when it closes after breakfast. However, the lack of common facilities, such as a gym, pool, and laundry room, might be a deal-breaker for potential guests; the nearby Sydney Boulevard Hotel also offers free Wi-Fi, and has a gym and conference facilities.
Scene
Welcoming but businesslike feel
The seven-story Metro Hotel on Pitt looks somewhat grand from the outside, with an elegant, brown facade that stands out against the modern office towers and slightly grimy, brick buildings around it. Entrance is through a sleek, marble vestibule with sliding glass doors, above which hang vibrant green, potted plants. Inside, the lobby is chic and inviting, though a bit dated, with soft lighting, white marble floors, and a mix of cream and light-wood paneled walls. Small seating areas have red sofas with gold crisscross patterns (the same upholstery is found in some of the rooms), and heavy wood coffee tables. Hallways are clean and carpeted, with some red walls and framed artwork that includes photos of Sydney. The Metro Brasserie feels more modern and stylish in comparison to the rest of the hotel, with shiny wood floors; sleek, wood-laminate tables; and a likewise slick bar, with gray stools and chrome shelves. Though it feels like a business hotel, it's a better choice for leisure tourists, as it lacks meeting rooms and conventional business facilities.
Location
On Pitt Street in the heart of the Central Business District, right by Hyde Park
Although surrounded by some gritty buildings, the hotel is also close to a 7-Eleven, and plenty of dining and drinking options. The hotel is right on Pitt Street, and Hyde Park is a few minutes' walk away, while the Australian Museum takes around eight minutes on foot. Bondi Beach and the Taronga Zoo are each a 15- to 25-minute drive away (depending on traffic). The Rocks neighborhood and Sydney Opera House take around 10 minutes to reach by car, or about a half-hour on foot. The Sydney Airport is a 15- to 25-minute drive, and can be reached in 25 minutes via the T2 train from Museum Station, a four-minute walk away.
Rooms
Range of rooms types, including some freshened-up options
The Metro Hotel has 119 rooms in four categories: Budget, Standard, Superior, and Superior Deluxe. There's also a large, open-plan King Spa Suite. Most rooms have golden-beige walls with framed Aboriginal artwork, soft lighting, reddish carpets, and red fabric headboards with matching runners. However, a number of rooms were refurbished in 2014 and have a more contemporary, minimal, and -- some could say -- masculine look, with striped carpeting in multiple shades of gray, and nature-photo canvas prints on the walls. All rooms have flat-screen TVs with Foxtel cable, electric kettles, mini-fridges, and irons with ironing boards. Bathrooms have cream-colored tile floors, large vanity areas, hairdryers, and glass-walled walk-in showers with toiletry dispensers. The King Spa Suite has a separate shower and a jetted tub.
Features

There's also a tiny business center with a single computer terminal, and Wi-Fi is free throughout the property.
