Chateau Beachside

One of the longest operating hotels in Surfers Paradise, Chateau Beachside is a mid-range, low-key property right across the street from the beach. The hotel offers 100 bright rooms and apartments with microwaves, flat-screen TVs, and DVD players. Apartments also have full kitchens. Features include a huge pool, a well-furnished game room with a pool table, foosball, and arcade games, and coin-operated laundry facilities. While there are no on-site dining options, the hotel does have a couple of barbecue grills that guests can use. This is a great choice for families and couples alike, but families with kids should also consider Paradise Resort Gold Coast, which has bunk beds and gaming systems in the rooms plus a water park, an indoor ice-skating rink, and supervised children's activities.

Surfers Paradise Marriott Resort & Spa

The four-pearl Marriott Resort & Spa is a high-end hotel located just outside the busy center of Surfers Paradise. Decor is a mix of modern and traditional, with a beautifully finished lobby, extensive pool area and a clean, fresh feel to the 216 guest rooms and suites. Rooms all have balconies with views over the river or ocean. There are a number of great amenities, including a spa, tennis courts, gym, and bike rentals, while a kids' club and several meeting rooms make it popular with both families and business travelers. This resort is way ahead of its local competition, but travelers looking for a more central location could also check out some of the top-end rooms at the Hilton Surfers Paradise Hotel & Spa.

Artique Surfers Paradise

The four-pearl Artique Surfers Paradise houses 176 air-conditioned self-catering one- to three-bedroom modern apartments with fully equipped kitchens that include ovens, dishwashers, and plenty of cookware. This giant high-rise is within walking distance of the beach and Surfer’s Paradise shopping center, with its many shops and restaurants, and there's a tram stop nearby. All units have balconies and floor-to-ceiling windows, and some have wraparound corner windows and ocean views. Hotel facilities include a heated outdoor pool and barbecue area, a modest fitness center and spa with a sauna and steam room, a theater room for watching movies, and a virtual golf area open to golf club members. Be aware that Wi-Fi comes with a fee, and when we visited, some of the rooms had unpleasant drain odors.

Alpha Sovereign Hotel

This 180-room mid-range Australis Sovereign Hotel, just off of the main drag in Surfer’s Paradise on Australia's Gold Coast, offers simple, modern rooms with balconies, while some include kitchenettes. Certain aspects of guest rooms -- like countertops and drapes -- look a little outdated, though, and rooms show a bit of wear and tear. The property offers a hot tub and sauna, an outdoor pool, and a small fitness center for those not getting enough activity on the beach, which is only two blocks away. There are also family-friendly features like a game room and sandy wading area for kids. Guests looking for a more up-market resort-style stay should consider the Surfer's Paradise Mariott Resort & Spa, which is just next door, though it will be more expensive.

Wyndham Surfers Paradise
3018 Surfers Paradise Blvd Cnr Markwell Ave

The three-and-a-half-pearl Wyndham Surfers Paradise is relatively modern apartment-hotel just one block from the beach and a 10-minute walk to central Surfers Paradise. Apartments are bright and spacious, with balconies overlooking the ocean or river. All include full kitchens with dishwashers and washer/dryers, plus air-conditioning and iPod docks, though there are fees for Wi-Fi and pool towels. The outdoor area is well-designed, with a great beach-style pool and whirlpool, plus a nice chill-out area with sofas and barbecues. Breakfast and light lunches are served in the Lobby Lounge restaurant and there are other eateries on the ground floor. Travelers might want to compare rates with nearby Artique Surfers Paradise for a similar apartment-hotel, though it doesn't have restaurants on-site.

Mantra on View Hotel

This large upper-middle-range hotel with a massive 1980s corporate-style lobby offers 409 modest but modern rooms in a 20-story high-rise tower. There are 10 different room types -- all air-conditioned -- and all units come with balconies and a hint of mid-century modern appeal. However, air-conditioning units may be unevenly spaced in the rooms, which may also suffer the occasional maintenance problem such as falling down curtain rods or a touch of peeling paint. The outdoor grounds occupy a full city block on top of a parking lot and there are several side-by-side pools, a hot tub, and a couple of tennis courts. There are also a spa and a small fitness center. The property is popular with tour groups, Japanese independent tourists, and young travelers who flock here for the competitive prices.

voco Gold Coast

The 20-story Watermark Hotel & Spa Gold Coast is an upscale property that draws both families and couples with its great location. Situated on Surfers Paradise Boulevard adjacent to the Q1 tower, guests have easy access to the beach, as well as numerous eateries and shops. On-site features are extensive, consisting of buffet and sophisticated eateries, two small outdoor pools, and a bar with a gambling zone, plus a spa and sufficiently equipped gym. The 388 rooms are largely attractive and contemporary, though the bathrooms -- most with shower/tub combos -- could use a refresh. All come with air-conditioning, mini-fridges, and flat-screen TVs, but Wi-Fi requires a fee. Travelers wanting an apartment-style property should consider the similarly priced Wyndham Surfers Paradise just across the street.

Rhapsody Resort

The upscale Rhapsody Resort is situated at the north end of Surfers Paradise, allowing for a relaxed setting within easy access of attractions. Opened in 2016, the design throughout is modern and sleek, and its 41 floors allows for lovely ocean views from areas such as the rooftop terrace. The 223 rooms range from Studios to Two-Bedroom Apartments, all of which have full kitchens, washer/dryers, flat-screen TVs, and floor-to-ceiling windows. Excellent on-site features consist of a small outdoor pool and hot tub, a well-equipped fitness center with great vistas, a barbecue grill area, and a lounge area. A casual ground-level cafe receives positive reviews, but it only serves dinner on select nights. Wi-Fi and parking are both free. Travelers wanting a spa and more on-site restaurants should consider Q1 Resort & Spa, also an apartment-style property.

Hilton Surfers Paradise

Less than five minutes from the Surfer's Paradise Esplanade, the well-located Hilton Surfers Paradise Hotel is also within a short walk of the city's main beach and the Cavill Avenue pedestrian mall. The upscale property has 419 rooms ranging from standard hotel rooms to residential-style apartments, and while decor varies a bit from one category to another, all rooms are contemporary and simple, with massive bathrooms and excellent beds. Fees for most guests will add up though, as Wi-Fi isn't free in many rooms and there is a fee for parking and breakfast. The Salt Grill, the hotel’s main restaurant, has an outstanding wine list, and there is a cafe, pool-side bar, and lounge bar, as well as a fitness center, spa, and indoor and outdoor pools throughout the hotel. Guests looking to stay directly on the beach may want to consider Peppers Soul Surfers Paradise for similar upscale lodgings, though rates will be higher.

Moorings on Cavill

The Moorings on Cavill Avenue offers mid-range apartments overlooking the Nerang River, three blocks from Surfers Paradise's main drag. The property maintains clean, somewhat outdated and mismatched rooms that vary in decor from one unit to the next, but it's a particularly good deal for families in the low season. Rooms are generally bright and are cleaned once a week. All have washers and dryers along with full kitchens. On-site amenities include an outdoor saltwater pool with a barbecue area, a hot tub, and a kids' pool. The more upscale apartments at Q1 Resort and Spa sometimes aren't too much pricier and are also worth considering.
