Bottom Line

The Stratford-upon-Avon is an upscale, redbrick hotel overlooking a pleasant leafy garden located five minutes' walk from the main train station. The 102 rooms are nicely presented in natural woods with soft lighting, free Wi-Fi, and satellite TV, though some are prone to internal noise -- especially when the property hosts weddings. Dining is decent with free full English breakfast and plenty of a la carte options. While there are plenty of hotels nearer the attractions, those looking for smart lodgings within strolling distance of the main tourist sights will find plenty to like here. Guests who wouldn't mind staying farther from town might want to compare rates with Ettington Chase Hotel, which has an indoor pool and hot tub.

Scene

Modern take on country-style architecture with inviting though chain-hotel vibe

Entry to The Stratford-upon-Avon is via a barrier-protected driveway which circles around the main building and past a pleasant and secluded swathe of lawn dotted with trees and shrubbery. The property itself is a modern, redbrick take on more traditional country-style architecture, complete with clock tower and weathercock. Stepping inside, it's softly lit with plenty of comfy-looking armchairs, wood paneling, and vases of dried flowers that help create an inviting ambience. Swirly-patterned carpets and neutral tones in the hallways also create a slightly chain-hotel vibe. Clientele largely comprises weekending couples, though a non-touristy vibe also attracts plenty of weekday business guests.

Location

Within walking distance of River Avon and town's historic sights

Although the
setting has a slightly secluded and country vibe, the hotel is centrally
located with most of the main tourist attractions a short stroll away.
Historical sights including Shakespeare's childhood home, various museums
dedicated to the Bard, and The Swan Theatre -- home to the Royal Shakespeare
Company -- are all within five to 15 minutes' walking distance. The picturesque River Avon, spanned
by ancient bridges and surrounded by charming, old semi-timbered inns and cozy
restaurants, is around 12 minutes away on foot. Stratford-upon-Avon main train
station is five minutes' walk from the hotel, while Junction 15 of the M40
motorway is the same time by car.

Rooms

Relaxing, modern rooms with soft lighting, free Wi-Fi, and Sky TV

The hotel has 102
rooms, all of which are decorated in muted earth tones (browns, greens, and puce) with natural wood paneling and smart contemporary
furnishings, while soft lighting creates a pleasantly relaxing atmosphere. Standard amenities include air-conditioning, mini-fridges with free mineral water,
tea/coffee facilities, ironing facilities, safes, and flat-screen TVs with some Sky channels. Wi-Fi is
also speedy and free of charge. Bathrooms are clean and contemporary with
wooden floors and shower/tub combos. Superior Rooms are more spacious and add
fluffy bathrobes, glossy magazines, and
better quality of bath products. Feature Rooms add four-poster beds, views over the hotel gardens, higher-quality tea and coffee, and fresh milk and other drinks stocked in mini-fridges. Although rooms are generally quiet, there have been reports of
poor soundproofing when the hotel is hosting events.
