Towering over Stockholm in a 34-story building, the Scandic Victoria Tower is a modern, high-rise hotel with 299 rooms, designed by Swedish architect Gert Wingårdh to be the tallest building in the city. An entirely glass building made of multicolored mirrored panels, the tower reflects the sky down on the surrounding Kista neighborhood -- also known as the Kista Science City, as it's a hub for innovative enterprises. The hotel mostly caters to business travelers working in the area, and has a panoramic, 34th-floor SkyBar, as well as a modern gym and sauna on the 22nd floor. Despite its popularity with business travelers, the hotel's rates are somewhat high for its mid-range caliber and its location too far from the center of Stockholm for tourists.
Scene
Geometric, whimsical, and minimalist Nordic design
A new-build sky-scraper that's the tallest in Stockholm, the Scandic Victoria Tower makes use of simple materials and big spaces in an artsy way. The lobby, lounge, and restaurant flow into each other, creating a spacious communal area that feels social, connected, and lively. The entire hotel is filled with designer furniture from Vitra, Montana, and Flos, which lends it an edgy, urban vibe. The carpets in the hotel corridors mimic the triangular shapes of the windows, and the design extends the geometric theme through round rugs, square or rectangular seats, and bold pop-art-style color. Dandelion lampshades and pendant lights are everywhere, as are potted plants and flowers. Despite its whimsical and Avant-garde style, the hotel is primarily popular with business travelers.
Location
In the suburban Kista Science City, a 10-minute walk to the Kista shopping mall
The hotel is far out in the Stockholm suburbs, a 20-minute train ride from the center of Stockholm via the nearby commuter train station, Helenelund, a five-minute walk from the lobby door. The Kista Science City business center is just a few minutes away on foot, and the Kista Galleria shopping mall -- with its restaurants and shops -- is a 10-minute walk. The closest subway station is also just a few minutes away. Trendy Sodermalm is about half an hour from Helenelund station, and has some of the hippest shops and bars in Stockholm. Stockholm Arlanda Airport is a half-hour train ride from the hotel. The hotel doesn't have on-site parking, but there is street parking in the area.
Rooms
Large, modern, and clean with hardwood floors and Avant-garde triangular windows
Rooms at the Scandic Victoria Tower are modern and minimalist in typical Scandinavian style, with hardwood floors, muted tones accented by pops of red, and all the requisite amenities for a comfortable stay. All rooms have stylized triangular windows, and higher-floor rooms have impressive views over the city, although some rooms aren't as bright as might be expected. Quirky accent pieces like the colorful Eames "Hang It All" coat rack can be found in every room. The modern bathrooms have white subway tiles, square sinks, and Face Stockholm toiletries; most rooms have combination shower/tubs with half-glass enclosures, and higher-tier rooms also have bathrobes. Most rooms have coffee-making facilities, but there are no minibars. Beds are comfortable but some guests complain about comforters being too heavy and the climate control not adjusting sufficiently. The flat-screen TVs have limited English-language channels.
Features
Lobby restaurant and bar with free breakfast, 34th-floor SkyBar, 22nd-floor gym and sauna, 16 conference rooms, free Wi-Fi
The Scandic Victoria Tower has a scenic fitness center, with high-rise city views from the 22nd floor, as well as a full range of modern equipment and machines, and a sauna with a glass wall looking out over the city. The 34th-floor SkyBar is a popular place to grab a (pricey) drink and take in some panoramic views, alongside art installations like a flying bicycle that dangles from the ceiling. On the ground floor, a sprawling restaurant and bar serves an extensive free breakfast daily, although the menu options for other meals can be limited. The 16 conference rooms are fully equipped with everything business guests could need. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout the hotel. Children are especially welcome, and are greeted with a welcome gift.
