The Elite Hotel
Adlon is an upper-mid-range hotel housed in an attractive 19th-century property
in the center of Stockholm. Set on one of Stockholm's main streets, the hotel
is within easy walking distance of city center attractions, as well as a short
stroll to train connections. While much of the property has been brought up to
date, some parts of the hotel are still in need of a refresh. The breakfast, however, is excellent and the restaurant is one of the
area's most popular. While rates are in-line with the surrounding competition,
you might feel short-changed if you get a pre-refurbished room -- especially if
it's one of the small ones.
Scene
Friendly and functional chain hotel housed in a 19th-century neoclassical building
The Hotel Adlon
occupies a handsome neoclassical building dating back to 1884. While the
interiors were very dated when it taken over by the Elite hotel chain in 2013, most
common spaces have received a makeover to give it a more arty and hip feel that
fits well with the Stockholm vibe. The reception area is unfussy and bright,
with a mixture of contemporary and vintage-looking furnishings, plenty of blonde wood paneling, and a large framed Jack Nicholson photo overlooking the scene.
The ambience is friendly, though functional, while attracting an even mix of
business guests and vacationers. Some areas have not been updated as recently as others, though, and it shows.
Location
Overlooking central Stockholm's Vasagatan street, close to the station
The hotel is
located on one of the main streets in central Stockholm -- Vasagatan, in the district
of Norrmalm. While within walking distance of most of the city center, Norrmalm
also features Sweden's largest shopping area, complete with an underground mall, while the city's charming old town -- on the island of Stadsholmen -- is a
five-minute cab journey away. The city's central train station is also just a couple
minutes' walk away; this is where you can find tunnelbana (Stockholm's Metro rail) and the Arlanda
express train, which connects to the Arlanda International Airport in about 20
minutes.
Rooms
Renovated rooms are clean and modern, but others haven't been updated.
Renovated rooms feature small marble bathrooms and simple, attractive furniture with pops of color. Others feel dated and are tired in
places. Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, free Wi-Fi, and minibars,
though no tea/coffee facilities. The renovated bathrooms are modern and clean
with marble tops and hairdryers. While most rooms are well sound-proofed, some
lower level rooms are prone to some street noise. Room size is also pretty
small, with some feeling tiny.
Features
Good buffet breakfast, but it can get crowded
A decent and
generous buffet breakfast -- with a range of meats, smoked salmon, eggs, cereal,
and yogurt -- is served in the hotel bar. It can get a little crowded in the
morning but breakfast is included in the rate. The Kott & Fiskbaren (The Meat
and Fish Bar) restaurant is open for lunch and dinner and also has a nice deli
section. Both the restaurant and deli are very popular with locals. A small
fitness room has a couple exercise machines and parking is available for a fee.
Wi-Fi is available free of charge throughout.
