For those looking to escape to a tropical beach resort with their family, friends, or business associates, the Sauípe Park is paradise, with everything from a private beach to a golf course, pond, and full-service spa. Although the 404-room property is within walking distance of an authentic village -- Nova da Praia -- it is isolated in its own resort complex that doesn’t provide much flavor or ambiance from real Brazilian culture. Still, the beach is spectacular, and kids have plenty to keep them occupied with their own play area and pool. Because the grounds are equipped with a large conference center, it’s also a convenient option for events and business gatherings. Just be aware that the airport is about an hour and a half drive away and that the resort is packed around holidays.
Scene
Enormous resort with amusement-park vibe that doesn't offer much in the way of Brazilian culture
Surrounded by palm trees and horses grazing in the plentiful green grass, Sauípe Park is a true oasis. However, if authentic Brazilian character is what you’re looking for, you won’t find much of it here, in spite of the lobby’s elaborate decorations of old wooden ships suspended over water and local women clad in elaborate traditional dresses. In sum, the place is trying to exhibit some personality, but it’s really just a sprawling resort, replete with its own “village” of shops that includes boutiques selling surf shorts and price-spiked sun dresses.
The manicured grounds are lovely to stroll through, with bridges over a pond where you can paddle in a kayak or float around in a boat shaped like a swan. The whole place has an amusement park feel that’s geared toward relaxation and fun, a type of vacation stay that stands in stark contrast to the harsher realities of Brazil’s surrounding area.
Location
Isolated property with huge private beach; a long drive to airport and downtown Salvador
Part of the Costa do Sauípe complex, Sauípe Park is surrounded by greenery -- towering palm trees, rich foliage, and meticulously manicured tropical plants and bushes. A private, miles-long beach runs along the grounds, rocky in places but smooth in others. The complex is a gated resort about an hour-and-a-half drive up the coast from Salvador’s airport and even farther from Itapuã and downtown Salvador. However, the resort is a short walk to Vila Nova da Praia and Nossa Senhora dos Prazeres Chapel. Also, Praia da Barra em Sauípe and Praca de Meio Dia are short drives away.
Rooms
Basic box-shaped spaces to expansive suites, though overall decor is lacking
There are more than 400 rooms at Sauípe Park, all brightly painted but otherwise lacking in decoration. Units range from basic, box-shaped spaces with beds, dressers, wardrobes, and walk-out balconies to spacious suites and apartments with living rooms, dining tables, and larger balconies with hammocks. Due to the resort’s location near a swamp and general humidity, there are a few signs of rust and mold; some of the faucets and tiles could stand to be touched up or replaced. There’s a charge for Wi-Fi in the rooms, though the all-inclusive option includes non-alcoholic drinks that are restocked in the mini-fridges. Bathrooms are small in some rooms; all have enclosed showers and suites come with both a shower and a tub. There’s no air-conditioning unit but a ceiling fan and sea breeze provide cooler temperatures. Rooms with awesome views of the water also bring in constant sounds of music from the pool area.
Features
Expansive resort with array of activities, shops, and a miles-long private beach
A true resort village, Sauípe Park is a sprawling expanse of amenities that include a horse stable with riding arena, kayaking, paddle boarding, and boat rides on a private pond. There’s also an enormous swimming pool as well as a golf course, mini-golf area, volleyball courts, and tennis courts. Horseback riding and tennis lessons are available too and the resort offers daily activities such as dancing and games.
The enormous buffet restaurant has several sections that include fresh salads and fruits, a carving station, and a dessert table. There are also three bars with food and drinks available 24/7. The full-service spa offers a complete lineup of massages and body treatments, but the best feature is the miles-long beach -- by far the wildest component of the manicured complex.
Sauípe Park has a number of shops in outdoor mall style that sell beach items, golfing gear, clothes, and accessories. The grounds even include a special kids’ area with a large toy-filled clubhouse and separate pool. Laundry, babysitting, and room service are available as well. Guest can rent a golf cart to get around the grounds for the duration of your stay and airport transfers can be arranged.
