**This hotel was tragically destroyed during *Hurricane Irma* in September 2017.The hotel is currently completely closed for the foreseeable future.** The Summit Hotel is a three-pearl hotel located on the Dutch side of St. Martin, overlooking Simpson Bay Lagoon. The hotel’s 50 guest rooms are clean and pleasant, featuring queen-size sofa beds and kitchens with stove tops. The pool, open-air restaurant, and many guest room balconies are positioned to highlight the property’s striking bay views. Tang's Hideaway serves Asian fare, but breakfast isn't offered. Two nice beaches and a large casino are within a 15-minute walk, to prevent it from feeling overly isolated. But it’s worth comparing rates with the Azure Hotel on Simpson Bay, which lacks the Summit House’s pool but offers direct beach access.I think the restaurant photo album is incorrectly named. According to their website, the restaurant is called Tang's Hideaway, not Fat Tony's. MW
Scene
Apartment-style hotel with a picturesque setting and intimate ambience
The Summit Hotel offers a casual and homey atmosphere against a dramatic backdrop. The pool area and restaurant are modest based on facilities alone, but the dramatic bay views and lush surrounding grounds greatly enhance their appeal. Pretty paths lined with flowers wind gently between the hotel’s low-rise villas with their pastel trim. Rolling green mountains and the island of Anguilla are visible to guests lounging by the pool, dining at the restaurant, and (in many cases) relaxing on their own private balconies. Students and teachers from the nearby American University of the Caribbean sometimes rent rooms
long-term here or dine at the on-site restaurant. Overall, the
ambience is relaxed and friendly -- don’t be surprised if other guests or staff
strike up a conversation with you at the bar. And several staff members at the Summit House have worked here since it opened in the 1970s, becoming familiar faces for repeat guests. The hotel attracts a fair share of these regulars, some of whom visit annually, but the atmosphere is equally inviting for first-timers. Rooms with kitchens and sofa beds
seem ideal for families, but the hotel is most popular with couples, perhaps
owing to the lack of kid-friendly amenities on-site.
Location
Set in the quiet Cupecoy area of Sint Maarten, a 15-minute walk from Mullet Bay Beach
The Summit Hotel is built on a scenic bluff, offering
spectacular views over Simpson Bay Lagoon. Streets around the hotel are
pretty bland with limited dining and entertainment options; however, the Starz
Casino complex is located 10 minutes away on foot. In addition to gaming, the
casino has nine restaurants that are pretty popular. While the hotel's location isn't beachfront, Cupecoy Beach
is just under a 15-minute walk away, as is the much larger Mullet Bay Beach. Other sights require a car. The hotel is a six-minute drive from the island’s main
nightlife hub, Maho Village. The Dutch capital, Philipsburg, is a 30-minute
drive away and the French capital, Marigot, can be reached in about 20 minutes
by car. Princess Juliana International Airport is less than a 10-minute drive
away.
Rooms
Quaint rooms include furnished balconies and full kitchens
Guest rooms
at the Summit Hotel offer large balconies with appealing views of the pool,
Simpson Bay Lagoon, or the hotel’s green grounds. Olive tones are reflected in
the curtains, bed skirts, and sofa beds, tying the rooms’ decor together. The wooden furniture and tropical patterned sofas are simultaneously dated and homey. All rooms
include kitchens with older (but full-size) fridges, dishwashers, stove tops, and toaster
ovens, as well as plenty of cookware and cutlery. Dining tables are attached to
the kitchen cabinets in some rooms, a set-up that's space saving but somewhat
awkward. Rooms also have free Wi-Fi, flat-screen TVs, and personal safes. Bathrooms feature Tarocco bath products, an eco-friendly
line by Baronessa Cali. Some bathrooms include sleek square sinks and showers,
while others have older fixtures and shower/tub combos. The Two-Bedroom Villa
offers a separate living room and dining area.
Features
Outdoor pool with wonderful bay views, breezy on-site restaurant, and free Wi-Fi
Features at The Summit Hotel reflect its status as a simple, casual property. The star attraction could be the hotel's pool, an average-sized rectangular pool with
fantastic views over Simpson
Bay Lagoon. It's surrounded by an attractive wooden deck with lounge
chairs and beach umbrellas. Drinks are served at a cute little bar area set on
one corner of the deck. Happy hour specials are a fun touch in the early evenings. The hotel’s
restaurant, Tang’s Hideaway, is located adjacent to the bar. This small
restaurant offers open-air seating at simple tables covered with checkered
tablecloths. Open for lunch and dinner, the restaurant serves fresh sushi, noodle
dishes, and other Asian-inspired fare -- but breakfast isn't offered.A small
man-made beach, located just behind the restaurant, features a volleyball net
and a handful of lounge chairs. It’s a thoughtful idea, designed to compensate
for the hotel’s lack of direct beach access, but it misses the mark. There’s no
swimming area, and the views of the bay are obscured by the restaurant. Free
parking is available in a lot with gated access, and free Wi-Fi is offered
throughout.
