**This hotel was tragically impacted by **Hurricane Irma in September 2017 and is currently closed. We will update our review as soon as we have more information. Mercure St. Martin and Marina is a mid-range property near Marigot with 172 simple and colorful rooms with free Wi-Fi. The hotel has a beautiful beachfront filled with palm trees and hammocks, a scenic infinity pool, an on-site restaurant with a free hot breakfast, and a spa. Note that the beach faces the lagoon, and not the ocean. Rates are reasonable, but potential guests may want to compare rates at L’Hoste Hotel in Orient Bay, a good choice for guests wanting a boutique environment with a free breakfast.
Scene
Large hotel with a cozy feel and quirky gardens
The hotel is painted white and is structured in a modern
style, with balconies jutting out from each room. There is free parking in
front of the hotel, but the lot can get crowded at times. Like many hotels on this strip, the property is gated, and guests must use their room keys to gain access to the property's main gates. Although the Mercure is a chain hotel, the property has a cozy, lower-key ambience more common to small, privately run hotel. The hallways are decorated with simple Picasso prints and there's a large Robert Indiana Love sculpture at the entrance to the pool. At the middle of the property is a large garden area filled with young palm trees, vases, and statues that's lit up with multicolored lights at night. The hotel primarily attracts vacationers.
Location
Beachside property near shopping and restaurants in Marigot
The beachside Mercure is located on the west (French) side of the island, just past
the seedy Sandy Ground neighborhood, and a two-minute drive to a grocery store. It's a 10-minute drive into Marigot, the
capital of the French side, which has shopping and plenty of restaurants. Maho
Beach - arguably one of the best beaches on the island -- is a 10-minute drive away, while getting to the airport takes about 12 minutes.
Rooms
Minimal, colorful rooms with contemporary bathrooms and free bottled water
The 172 air-conditioned rooms at the Mercure are stylish and minimal. Each unit has a
bright yellow accent wall decorated with a colorful Caribbean art print, black or plywood furniture
with straight angles and sharp features, and a modern white chair. Many of the rooms also come with sofabeds with brown and orange throw cushions. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, alarm clocks with iPod docks, mini-fridges, kettles, safes, and large closets. Free bottled water is also provided, which is especially useful as it's not recommend for guests to drink the tap water on the French side of the island. Bathrooms are small and have a contemporary look, with white square vanities and glass walk-in rainfall showers.
Features
Beautiful lagoon beach, French restaurant with free hot breakfast, and free but spotty Wi-Fi
The hotel's spacious
and nicely landscaped lagoon-facing beach is one of the biggest highlights, and there are plenty of palm trees, hammocks,
lounge chairs, and shaded canopies scattered on the sand. The triangular infinity pool is scenic as well, though it is small for a hotel of this size. There are only a dozen lounge chairs
surrounding the pool, so finding a seat during high season may be difficult. There are also three covered cabanas and a whirlpool hot tub.The Mercure's Les Voiles restaurant serves a free and ample hot breakfast, with eggs, cheeses, meats, pancakes, and drinks. The spacious open-air restaurant also serves casual a la carte dishes at lunch and becomes more upscale at dinnertime. Other features include a spa with a steam room that offers a variety of treatments and nail services. There's also a fitness center with a treadmill, an elliptical, a couple of exercise bikes, and free weights. Just off the lobby is a small gift shop selling snacks and sundries and a business center with two computers. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel, but the connection is spotty at
times.
