The Monterey Hotel, Sure Hotel Collection by Best Western is a mid-range property on the edge of town, notable for its leisure club that includes an indoor and outdoor pool. It's dwarfed by the nearby Hotel de France whose grounds and amenities (as well as its rates) are far more grand, but guests looking for lower-priced rooms may not mind the even more antiquated decor at the Monterey. Rooms do not have air-conditioning, and they can get hot in the summer, though fans are provided in every closet. Gordini's Restaurant serves traditional cuisine with a large wine list, and a full English breakfast is included in the room rate.
Scene
Traditional hotel with a dated style
The hotel's common areas look like a 1990s version of traditional style, with wood paneling, doors, and trim running throughout the building.
Location
On the northern edge of St. Helier
The Monterey Hotel, Sure Hotel Collection by Best Western is on St. Saviour's Road with a bus stop located right outside the front door. It is about a five-minute drive or a 15-minute walk from the center of St. Helier, Jersey's largest town. The island's best shopping and cafes are within walking distance, as are such notable attractions as the Victorian-era Central and Beresford indoor markets, Jersey Museum, and Jersey St. Saviour's Church.
Rooms
Antiquated and lacking air-conditioning
The 73 rooms at the Monterey are either Double or Twin Rooms, with some Family Rooms that can accommodate two adults and two children. The decor throughout is outdated, with light-wood furniture and striped wallpaper. Some rooms have dark-green carpets, while others have striped red carpets with curtains and decorative pillows varying from plain, subdued fabrics to gaudy bright-gold patterns with deep-red floral prints. Small vanity dresser tables or desks tend to be missing chairs or stools, though Double Rooms have a pair of red armchairs. Some of the bathrooms have been renovated with new floors and fixtures, but others are in need of updating, and some of the cramped shower/tub combos have a musty odor. There are no mini-fridges or air-conditioning, but windows can be opened and fans are provided.
Features
Two pools, steam room, bar and restaurant with free English breakfast
The hotel bills itself as a leisure club, and while facilities are small, the hotel does have two pools. The indoor pool is in a bright, vaulted room with a hot tub. There's a steam room too, with a handy rain shower outside its door, but the attached fitness room is cramped and uninviting. The seasonal outdoor pool is surrounded by a stone patio with sun loungers. Gordini's Restaurant serves hearty dishes like roast loin of pork marinated in beer and honey and served on a bed of colcannon mash, and the English breakfast is included in the rates. It has a popular "Sunday Carvery," where local residents come for the fresh-cut roasts. The bar lounge also serves sandwiches, salads, pasta, and has a decent (if pricey) wine and Champagne list. Live entertainment (usually music) is offered twice a week during the high season.
