Bottom Line

Wingate by Wyndham St.
Augustine is a value chain hotel situated behind a Denny’s and a 20-minute drive outside the historic center of the city. The 70 rooms are dated, but clean and spacious, with microwaves, mini-fridges, and free Wi-Fi. The hotel offers a free
continental breakfast, an outdoor pool and whirlpool, and a business center.
There’s also a fitness center, but it’s quite small and has only four exercise machines. The hotel is fairly priced for its location and amenities, but guests traveling with dogs should check out Southern Oaks Inn, a pet-friendly motel with a fenced-in dog run and more modern rooms that's a bit closer to the Old Town.

Scene

Chain hotel that's a bit past its prime

Though it's a pleasant enough option for the area -- particularly given the often sky-high rates of hotels closer to St. Augustine's historic core -- expectations need to be managed a bit for a stay here. The hotel is housed in a four-story, beige
building with trademark green Wingate by Wyndham signs. Inside, the lobby is spacious, with a tiled central seating
area composed of upholstered chairs and a couch positioned around an area rug -- the whole thing has a whiff of late-'90s suburbia, with chunky furnishings and unsubtle patterns.
Displays of items for sale such as postcards, glass pieces, and necklaces gives the space the vibe of a chintzy souvenir shop. The breakfast area is just
off the lobby, with uninspiring tables and chairs arranged on dated carpeting. Guests here run the gamut from vacationers to business travelers, though the majority are families and couples looking for reasonable rates within striking distance of the beach and St. Augustine's Old Town.

Location

In suburbia off of I-95, a 20-minute drive to historic St. Augustine

The hotel is set just off I-95 behind a Denny’s
restaurant, in an area with lots of other hotels and chain restaurants -- the local vibe is decidedly suburban. It’s a four-minute drive to the St. Augustine Premium Outlets and 20 minutes by road to historic St. Augustine, which is home to Castillo de San Marcos, St. George Street, and the Cathedral Basilica St. Augustine -- many buildings in the area date back to the 1600s. There are plenty of bars and restaurants in the historic center of town as well, including several seafood places lining the riverfront. It’s a 20-minute drive to the sandy shores of Vilano Beach, and a 25-minute drive to St. Augustine Beach, where the beachfront park hosts craft fairs, concerts, and farmers markets. Both Daytona Beach International Airport and Jacksonville International Airport are around an hour’s drive away.

Rooms

Spacious rooms with dated decor, some with hot tubs

Though they are clean and spacious, when it comes to style, the rooms here aren't anything to write home about. The ambience is decidedly dated and tired. That being said, things are generally in good condition, and decor includes burgundy carpeting, stucco walls, gold curtains, dark-wood furniture, and floral still lives in
gold-leaf frames. Each room has a work desk with an office chair, a microwave, a mini-fridge, a flat-screen TV, a safe, free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, and a coffeemaker. Bathrooms have
dated wallpaper, long mirrors, granite countertops with lots of space, and
shower/tub combos. Suites with whirlpool tubs in the main rooms are also available. It's worth noting that past guests have complained of odors in rooms.

Features

Outdoor pool, free continental breakfast, and small fitness center

Wingate by Wyndham St. Augustine has
an outdoor pool and whirlpool with lounge chairs along with cafe-style seating under umbrellas. The area backs onto a canal, making it feel somewhat private, but views aren't particularly pretty. A free continental breakfast is provided and includes items like scrambled
eggs, sausage, bacon, fruit, and make-your-own waffles. There’s a small fitness
center with four exercise machines, and a business center with two computers,
printers, and a fax machine. Laundry facilities are available on-site, and
there's an ATM in the lobby. Two meeting rooms are available for private
events, and parking and Wi-Fi are both free.
