Bottom Line

The upper-middle-range, 60-room Earl’s Regent Hotel has a secluded setting a 12-minute drive from the center of Kandy, amid greenery and offering lush mountain views from several vantage points. Quality amenities include a swimming pool, two restaurants, and lovely spa, plus an air-conditioned gym. Rooms have pleasant and simple decor, either in a contemporary or colonial-inspired style. Flat-screen TVs, tea- and coffee-making facilities, free Wi-Fi, and minibars come standard, but only higher-category rooms have furnished balconies. There are signs of wear and tear, plus some rooms have uninspiring views or noise issues. It's worth considering the similarly named Earl’s Regency, as all rooms have stellar views.

Scene

Tastefully decorated hotel in a tranquil area with lush mountain views

Earl's Regent Hotel is situated in a peaceful area outside of Kandy, amid breathtaking scenery. Guests are greeted by a grand entrance presided over by two large statues of elephants -- a hint at the locally inspired decor that pervades throughout. The lobby has hand-carved wood furniture, a display of the region's famous teas, black-and-white marble floors, and more elephant decor. The design is dominated by neutral tones, with lots of wooden details. Hand-painted murals in rooms and the restaurant are particularly eye-catching. The quiet vibe makes this hotel primarily popular with couples, though some families and tour groups also stay here.

Location

Set in a tranquil area with sweeping mountain views, a 15-minute drive from attractions

The hotel is set a 15-minute tuk-tuk ride from the heart of Kandy, and within easy reach of the city’s attractions such as Kandy Lake, the Royal Palace, and the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic. There are no restaurants or bars within walking distance, though most guests appreciate the isolated setting. The Royal Botanical Gardens, however are only a five-minute tuk-tuk ride away. The hotel is around a two-and-a-half-hour drive from Bandaranaike International Airport, and about three hours from the capital of Colombo. Staff can organize airport transfers and on-site parking is free.

Rooms

Contemporary or colonial-inspired decor, plus mountain views from some

Spread across four floors, rooms are decorated with either contemporary or colonial-inspired furnishings, but all are pleasant and include lovely hand-painted Kandyan murals. The design is fairly simple and in neutral tones, though some add colorful rugs and framed photographs of Sri Lanka. Many rooms -- particularly those on the higher floors -- come with stunning views of the surrounding mountains, but others overlook a wall. Also note that some wear and tear is visible, and some past guests have complained of noise from neighboring rooms or on-site events. All rooms come with air-conditioning, ceiling fans, flat-screen TVs with satellite channels,tea- and coffee-making facilities, minibars, safes, and free Wi-Fi -- which can be spotty. Sleek bathrooms have small showers, hairdryers, and free toiletries. Higher-category rooms add furnished balconies or terraces (not all with good views), sitting areas, jetted bathtubs, and bathrobes.

Features

Appealing swimming pool, two restaurants, and Ayurveda spa

There are a decent array of features on-site to satisfy guests. A lovely swimming pool, which overlooks the mountains, is flanked by a series of white loungers and tables topped by white umbrellas. The main restaurant serves buffet-style meals all day, both indoors and out, with a range of international food. Meanwhile, the a la carte eatery is more upscale, offering international cuisine ranging from wood-fired pizzas to seafood and steaks. The Mix Bar, which features a striking mural of a jungle, serves cocktails and snacks, as well as tea and coffee. Those in need of pampering can head to Ayu Spa, which offers a range of treatments, including Ayurveda warm oil massage and manicures. An air-conditioned gym has a decent amount of equipment. The hotel’s banquet hall, which can house up to 300 people, can be used for weddings or other events. Wi-Fi and parking are free.
