Bottom Line

The gorgeous, upscale Buckingham Place boutique resort is a peaceful, secluded retreat with Rekawa Beach access and within a wildlife sanctuary. Its 16 massive contemporary rooms and suites have huge bathrooms and balconies, terraces, or private gardens offering fabulous Rekawa Lagoon views. Though the five-acre grounds provide many spots to kick back, including two pools, gardens, and a Mezzanine Lounge, there’s no gym, and both the massage room and garden pool are tiny. The Oceanfront restaurant is pricey, but has great food, and an all-day breakfast is included in rates. The free minibars in rooms and free canoe and bike rentals are also standout perks. The sleepy village surroundings are isolated and airports are over three hours away. Closer to Tangalle, Nuga Eden Villa Tangalle is much cheaper and has a bigger pool, but is far less luxurious.

Scene

Quiet, laid-back boutique resort surrounded by nature, wildlife, and the Rekawa Lagoon

Buckingham Place is a resort, but from its multiple lush gardens to its winding infinity pool, this property -- a contemporary, open-air bungalow-like structure framed by palm trees -- is more of a tranquil escape than a bustling, kid-friendly entertainment center. Small by resort standards, the hotel’s emphasis on relaxing among nature over constant stimulation is clear from the lobby itself: a breezy space furnished with wicker and wooden seating. The grounds sprawl over five acres of greenery, with pebbled pathways leading to the terraced rooms, ample outdoor space for strolling or lounging, and gorgeous views of both the Rekawa Lagoon and the beach in the distance. A pony and wildlife from the surrounding sanctuary enhance the rustic charm. With an air of serenity blanketing the entire space, it's perfect for couples or friends looking for a quiet, laid-back getaway.

Location

Isolated within in a remote village; walkable to the beach

The hotel is tucked inside the remote and sleepy fishing village of Rekawa, about a 20-minute drive from Tangalle, so it feels somewhat isolated. Even the main road is an unpaved stretch a few miles away, so getting around outside the property can be inconvenient, and there’s not much to see in the surrounding area. However, the hotel is nestled within the Rekawa Sanctuary, and Rekawa turtle beach is under a five-minute walk away. Day excursions to attractions like the Mulkirigala Rock Temples and the Ussangoda Beach, both over an hour’s drive away, can also be arranged. Bandaranaike International Airport is three and a half hours away by car. Ratmalana Airport is a three-hour drive away.

Rooms

Contemporary and airy rooms with bathroom skylights and outdoor spaces

Non-smoking rooms at Buckingham Place are individually decorated, and all are exceptionally large and airy (the smallest is 700 square feet). The look blends modern elements like cement floors and double bed frames with natural accents like wicker bathroom hampers and burlap lampshades. Colorful local artwork, vibrant cushions, and brightly painted outdoor chairs are tasteful contrasts against the rest of the neutral furniture. All rooms have spacious balconies, terraces, or private gardens providing spectacular views of the hotel grounds or Rekawa Lagoon. Large windows allow loads of natural light. Suites can have extra dressing rooms or bedrooms. There's also an accessible suite upon request for guests with mobility limitations.  While room sizes and styles are memorable, amenities aren’t extraordinary apart from the free minibar. All rooms come with air-conditioning, safes, and mini-fridges. While Wi-Fi is free, not all rooms have TVs. Ironing equipment can be provided upon request. Bathrooms are outfitted in stone and wood, and come with bidet-style toilets. The majority of rooms feature circular soaking tubs plus walk-in showers with rainfall showerheads under skylights. However, shower areas lack doors or dividers, so the lack of privacy can be an issue. Hairdryers and Ayurvedic toiletries are provided.

Features

Free all-day breakfast, two pools, and beautiful lounging spaces throughout the property

Buckingham Place provides relaxing and outdoor focused features. The hotel’s expensive and elegant Oceanfront restaurant, a partially open-air space with high ceilings and wood decor, offers stellar eclectic international and traditional local cuisine, with plenty of flexibility for guests with dietary restrictions. Seating for the restaurant also extends to the hotel’s other common areas, and the all-day availability of the breakfast menu (included with rates) is a perk for late risers. Jazz and warm lighting at night turns the space from casual to romantic, and a separate bar area has an extensive selection of cocktails, local teas, and fresh juices. Other amenities center on low-key recreation, with plenty of comfortable spaces throughout the property for lounging in various settings, including the Mezzanine Lounge and two gardens where beanbags or beach volleyball can be set up. A rear amphitheater hosts musical events in the spring, and is even open to guests who want to perform. Indoor entertainment is available in the recreation room, which provides board games, pool tables, and table tennis. While Rekawa Beach’s rough waters aren’t ideal for swimming in, guests can use the infinity pool that weaves through the hotel; the second pool in the garden feels too small for anything other than lounging. Canoeing and biking equipment can also be borrowed for free. However, there’s no gym on-site, and the tiny massage room has space for only one guest. The outsourced laundry service can also take longer than in typical resorts. The hotel has no business center, but Wi-Fi is free throughout the property. Staff can provide local mobile phones for guests to borrow.
