The Apartments Gajeta are nine simple, nicely finished apartments dotted around residential buildings in the center of Split. All apartments include well-equipped kitchens, lounges, and dining areas, without much in the way of fuss and frills -- perfectly functional and adequate for a couple self-catering days while you explore the area. A far cheaper option than the hotels in town, these apartments offer a great deal for families and groups on a budget -- couples and solo travelers, however, should check out the Golly&Bossy Design Hostel nearby.
Scene
Self-catering apartments serviced by independent travel agency
Down a particularly narrow street (even for Split), guests check in and collect their keys from the Gajeta Travel Agency -- a simple, two-desk, box room usually manned by the owner of the apartments, Mr Jerko. All nine of his apartments are within couple minutes' walk, and visitors are escorted to their respective accommodation. The self-catering apartments are all set within residential blocks, so guests -- largely families and groups staying more than a couple nights -- can live among the locals.
Location
Dotted in residential blocks around Split's town center
All of the apartments are located within the pedestrianized center of Split, within walking distance of all its attractions. The most impressive of these is Diocletian's Palace -- a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the world’s most impressive Roman monuments -- which is just minutes away on foot and packed full of cafes, bars, and restaurants. The town's seafront and marina are also easily walkable; tourists can jump on boats and ferries bound to Croatia's picturesque and trendy islands. Split Airport is about 16 miles to the west of the town, or about a 40-minute drive -- be aware much of Split is carless and parking is very limited.
Rooms
Simple but cozy self-catering apartments with free Wi-Fi and DVD players
Most of the nine apartments have been modernized with contemporary decor and furnishings to suit discerning travelers' tastes and feel like a home away from home. One of the flats still contains the owner's grandparent's antique furniture and has been renovated in a more traditional fashion with a rustic edge and features lovely, old, dark-wood rafters. All of the apartments have fully equipped kitchens or kitchenettes for self-catering purposes, as well as dining and living areas with free Wi-Fi, TVs (mostly flat-screen), and DVD players. Some apartments are upstairs in buildings with no elevator, so those with mobility issues should mention this when booking.
Features
Travel agency can arrange transport and tours
Since these are serviced apartments, there's not much offered beyond accommodation. However the Gajeta Travel Agency is obviously on hand to help with any transport or tour arrangements, as well as airport transfers. All apartments do have free Wi-Fi.
