Bottom Line

Deerfield Lodge at Heavenly is a mid-range property located in South Tahoe, a 10-minute walk from the famous lake. The convenient setting is also walking distance from restaurants, ski rentals, and Heavenly Ski Resort. Most guests stay here because of the 22 contemporary rooms and suites with kitchenettes and fireplaces. Some suites have two-person jetted tubs and master bedrooms with fireplaces. The quiet property has few on-site features, there's no restaurant or whirlpool. However, continental breakfast is served and there is an outdoor barbecue area and a nice living room-style lobby with a huge stone fireplace. The Lodge appeals to outdoorsy families and couples (and their pets) that plan to be out skiing and exploring all day. As an alternative, Marriott’s Timber Lodge has a restaurant and huge outdoor pool, only slightly higher rates.

Scene

Elegant lodge with friendly atmosphere

The Deerfield Lodge burned down in 2014 and was completely rebuilt 18 months later. The new property feels fresh and modern, like staying at a friend’s elegant vacation house. Decor features dark leather, natural and cherry woods, and stone floors and fireplaces. In the living room-style lobby, skis lean against a wall and a candy jar sits on the coffee table. Fresh pine-scented air wafts through the interiors and birds can be heard as well. Nature is central to the design. An outdoor courtyard area feels like a huge garden with tall pine trees. Low stone walls lead around the grounds and there are cushioned wicker benches. Staff are known for being extra friendly. Case in point: cookies are served in the afternoon.

Location

South Tahoe, within a 10-minute walk to Lake Tahoe

Deerfield Lodge at Heavenly is located on a quiet road just off Ski Run Boulevard in South Lake Tahoe. The property sits next to another lodge and is mostly surrounded by large pine trees. The location is convenient for tourists. Lake Tahoe is a 10-minute walk away. Restaurants and a grocery store on Ski Run Boulevard are within a 10-minute walk. There are also ski and snowboard rental shops along the Boulevard. Ski Run Marina is a two-minute drive or 10-minute walk. Heavenly Ski Resort is a four-minute drive or 20-minute walk away. Bijou Golf Course is a three-minute drive or 15 minutes on foot. Lake Tahoe Airport is about a 15-minute drive from the hotel. San Francisco International Airport is about three and a half hours away.

Rooms

Warm and cozy rooms and suites with fireplaces

Rooms and suites at the lodge are both contemporary and cozy. They have a lovely livable look and decor in shades of light brown, plus homey accents like embroidered pillows. All rooms and suites feature kitchenettes with mini-fridges, microwaves, Keurig coffeemakers, and dishes and silverware. There are also 40-inch flat-screen TVs, fireplaces, and balconies or terraces with pleasant views of the grounds. Wi-Fi is free. Modern bathrooms have shower stalls with white subway tile. Toiletries and hairdryers are provided. Suites are larger, at 700-square-feet and have breakfast bars and separate living rooms with soft couches. Deluxe Suites offer two-person jetted tubs, and two bathrooms, fireplaces, and flat-screen TVs. Guests praise the super-comfortable beds and soundproofing -- expect a good night’s sleep. Daily housekeeping is provided. There are free snacks, water bottles, coffee and tea, and hot cocoa in all rooms.

Features

Free continental breakfast, outdoor barbecue area, and free Wi-Fi

There aren’t many extra features at the property because most guests are out exploring Tahoe all day. Free continental breakfast includes a simple spread of pastries, bagels, and juice. There is an outdoor area with three barbecue grills and spices and seasonings for cookouts. Bottled water and candy are provided throughout the hotel, plus there are coffee and tea in the lobby all day. The pet-friendly property (for a fee) also has a grassy area just for pets and provides pet-waste bags. Outdoor parking is free. Wi-Fi is free throughout.
