The 64-room Minerva Hotel is a four-pearl property and one of the oldest hotels in Sorrento with incredible views of the Bay of Naples and Mount Vesuvius in the distance. Rooms are cheery and the majority have stunning water views, as do the rooftop pool and terraces. Though some of the furnishings and bathrooms look a bit tired, the hotel is very clean. Breakfast is included with the price of the room and there's an on-site fitness center. However, most guests get their exercise walking uphill from the city's center. For a chic boutique experience with the same views, compare prices at Maison La Minervetta.
Scene
Homey boutique with gorgeous views of the Bay of Naples
Hotel Minerva is eye catching. The gray stone exterior is accented with lipstick red painted shutters and balconies while green ivy climbs the walls. The back of the property overlooks the Mediterranean Sea and there's a gorgeous veranda with cushioned furniture for admiring the view. Inside, red velvet chairs look a bit worn and stacks of books are displayed for a homey vibe. A pretty atrium abuts to a stone wall, but blue chairs with clean lines look chic. Past guests have stated that the clientele here consists of older visitors.
Location
On a cliff overlooking the Bay of Naples in Sorrento
The Minerva Hotel was built in the 1800s directly on a cliff above the Mediterranean Sea. The road in front of the hotel is busy with traffic and walking can be dangerous. Taxis into the historic center of Sorrento are recommended for safety and to avoid the climb back up the hill after dinner. If walking distance to Sorrento Cathedral and a variety of restaurants and shops is more important than water views, check rates at Maison Tofani Sorrento, though they don't have a pool.
Rooms
Cheerful with sea views but dated bathrooms
There are 64 rooms inside the Minerva Hotel, 60 of which have frontal sea views and only four without a view. Canary yellow paint and floral tiles look festive, but brown wicker furnishings and dated bathrooms could use an update. Sketches of butterflies or Asian fish hang on the walls. Baskets of paperback novels and flat-screen TVs are nice touches. Rooms with furnished balconies are definitely a highlight, though past guests have complained that noise can be an issue.
Features
Veranda restaurant, fitness center, and rooftop pool with separate hot tub
A hot breakfast with bacon and eggs is included with the price of the room, though the quality of the meal gets mixed reviews and coffee is instant. Guests can pay more for an additional evening meal served by candlelight on the panoramic veranda and lunch is served a la carte. The unheated rooftop pool has ample sun loungers and the large hot tub wraps around the elevator for an unusually modern touch. There's a small but bright fitness center with cardio machines and weights. The lobby includes a desktop computer with Internet access.
