Bottom Line

The 19-room Hotel Villa di Sorrento is a small mid-range property smack dab in the middle of Sorrento. It's just a five-minute walk from the train station, as well as numerous restaurants and shops. Simple rooms -- most with pleasant blue-and-white color palettes -- have air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, minibars, rainfall showers, and hairdryers. Some add daybeds for kids or furnished terraces with dining tables. There's little else to this hotel, aside from a living room-style lobby and a pretty breakfast room where free continental spreads with homemade cakes are served. Wi-Fi is free and there is an elevator. It's worth considering Tasso Suites, which has a similarly central setting, more modern digs, and typically cheaper rates.

Scene

Small, old-fashioned hotel with few common areas

Occupying an 1854-built property that's been owned by the same family, Hotel Villa di Sorrento is a simple property whose greatest asset is its location. Among the busy streets of central Sorrento, this peach-painted hotel is best-suited to travelers who plan on spending most of their time outside the property exploring area sights. Common areas are limited to the first floor, where a front desk divides the living room-like lobby and breakfast room. The former is done in an old, traditional style -- think striped and patterned seating, classical landscape paintings, and a cherub clock sculpture. The dining area, meanwhile, is more contemporary and colorful, with a beautiful tile backsplash, placemats in varying hues, whitewashed arches, and vases. An elevator and staircase are available to take visitors up the four stories. Guests are a mix of business and leisure travelers.

Location

Just off of central Piazza Tasso

The hotel is located in the center of Sorrento just off of the busy Piazza Tasso, the city's main square. In the summer, the piazza is closed to cars in the evening and becomes a large pedestrian zone with lots of tourists. For train travel, Sorrento Station is a quick five-minute walk from the hotel's front door (guests with luggage can take a taxi, but the drive can often take longer). Numerous popular restaurants and bars line the surrounding streets, as do shops. Travelers connecting to ferries are roughly a 10-minute walk from the port. The closest part of the Amalfi Coast is a 30-minute drive from the hotel. Naples International Airport is about an hour away by car, or two hours away by train or ferry.

Rooms

Modest but bright rooms with Juliet-style or full balconies

The 19 rooms are all decorated in a similarly old-fashioned style, with tile floors, carved-wood or striped-fabric headboards, traditional wood furniture, and small pieces of floral or landscape artwork. Color palettes are either blue-and-white or light-orange. Comfort Rooms on the third and fourth floors are a bit more up-to-date with colorful paintings, blue hanging jewels, and modern lamps. Most rooms have Juliet-style balconies, while two on the top floor have big furnished terraces with pretty vistas. Standard amenities include flat-screen TVs, desks, closets with small safes, minibars, and air-conditioning units. Bathrooms either have old-fashioned pink and cream tiling or attractive blue patterned tiling. Regardless, all come with rainfall showers, bidets, hairdryers, and toiletries.

Features

Free breakfast in the dining room

As this is a small property, there's little in the way of on-site features. Although Hotel Villa di Sorrento lacks a full restaurant, all rates include a free continental breakfast in the lovely dining room. The well-regarded spread consists of fresh-baked cakes, fruit, cold meats and cheeses, yogurt, and muesli. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
