Bottom Line

The 31-room Hotel del Mare is a mid-range, competitively priced property on the cliff above the Gulf of Naples, a one-minute walk to the beach and an uphill trek to the city center. This simple property offers some surprising features, including cruises on the hotel's private boat to Naples or Capri. Traditionally furnished rooms have lovely hand-painted floor tiles; some have balconies and/or sea views. There’s a lobby bar, breakfast lounge with daily buffet, and a furnished rooftop terrace overlooking the sea. But, unlike the upscale Hotel Plaza, this property doesn’t have a pool or gym. Wi-Fi is free throughout.

Scene

Small, family-run property with sea views from a rooftop terrace

The three-pearl Hotel del Mare is a quaint family-run property that was built in the 1960s as a residential estate. It was made into a hotel by the Galano Family, who still owns the property. A winding road on the Sorrento coast leads to the four-story hotel that has stylish outdoor patio seating at the front door. A glass skylight over the entrance and floor-to-ceiling windows provide a lot of natural light in the lobby, which is lined in cool and striking Orange Vetri floor tiles. The lobby lounge area is furnished with orange chairs and books. There’s a stairwell and small elevator that lead to blue-tiled hallways with nautical designs on the floors. The low-key seaside property is beside a green cliff, overlooking the gulf that's crisscrossed by boats. The best views can be seen from white rattan furniture and lounge chairs on the hotel’s blue-tiled rooftop terrace. Overall, this mid-range property has many special and charming features that make it a solid pick for those who don't require luxe rooms.

Location

On the Sorrento Peninsula, overlooking the Gulf of Naples

The Hotel del Mare is nestled on the coast of the Sorrento Peninsula. Much like most hotels in this ancient fishing village, this property is on a cliff overlooking the Gulf of Naples and is just one-minute on foot from the Marina Grande beach. It’s a 15-minute walk up stairs to the city center’s Piazza Tasso with the nearby Sorrento train stop, tons of cafes, restaurants, and shops, such as the Limonoro which sells the city’s popular Limoncello, or lemon liqueur. The II Monazzero ice cream shop, under the same ownership as the hotel, is a five-minute walk away (guests receive special rates). Historic landmarks, including the 14th century Chiesa di San Francesco and Vallone dei Mulini are also in the city center. The Sorrento Port is 20 minutes away on foot with ferries to Capri and Naples. Pompeii is an hour by car and Mount Vesuvius is an hour and 15 minutes away. It’s one hour by car to the Naples International Airport.

Rooms

Vietri-tiled rooms with classic furnishings, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges; some with sea views

Rooms are traditional in design, with charming Italian details. Blue bedspreads, wooden furniture, and lovely Vietri ceramic tiles create a comfortable atmosphere. The best rooms have sea views from windows or casually furnished balconies. Single, Double, Triple, or Quadruple Rooms are available to accommodate a range of guests. Every room offers flat-screen TVs, writing desks, wardrobe closets, free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, safes, and mini-fridges. Blue, white, and yellow hand-painted tiles are also in small bathrooms that have narrow stall showers, bidets, and hairdryers.

Features

Grotto-style breakfast room, a bar, boat tours, parking, and concierge service

Walking into Hotel del Mare’s breakfast room feels like you’re entering a cave or grotto. Exposed rock-wall corridors lead into a comfortable dining room that features a stone wall adorned with plants, wooden ceiling beams, and a buffet that includes pastries, fruit, and salami, among other continental breakfast items. A bar is located in the small lobby with blue comfy chairs in a lounge. There's no on-site restaurant, but the owners do offer guest special rates at their ice cream shop, the neighboring II Monazzero. The hotel’s Gozzo boat offers private cruises along the Sorrento Coast for up to eight people. Parking for 50 cars and 30 scooters is available on-site for a fee, but space is limited during the peak season. The front desk is on-hand to assist with scheduling airport transfers and taxi service. Wi-Fi is available throughout for free.
