Bottom Line

The 115-room Grand Hotel Ambasciatori is a classic, luxury hotel perched dramatically above the sea with stunning views across the Bay of Naples to Mount Vesuvius. It has a private beach -- actually, more of a bathing deck with lounge chairs -- reached via an elevator. The hotel is not quite centrally located; the heart of Sorrento is a 15-minute walk away. Rooms are spacious and airy with modern design touches, lovely tile floors, and scenic balconies. The elegant restaurant and bars take advantage of the beautiful vistas. For travelers who don’t mind the higher price, the sea view rooms are quieter than the ones that overlook the road.

Scene

Elegant and refined hotel

The Grand Hotel Ambasciatori is supremely elegant both inside and out. The beautifully landscaped grounds, filled with palm trees and flowers, perfectly showcase the jaw-dropping sea views. Inside the salmon-colored building, the airy spaces are filled with simple furniture, including beige, yellow, and orange couches, and gilded chandeliers and sconces. The front desk has inlaid wood panels crafted by local artists. Le Muse Restaurant is classically decorated with a cream and white color palette and large picture windows overlooking the water. There are several other casual bars with equally beautiful views. The hotel’s simple bathing platform is lined with lounge chairs. The atmosphere is peaceful and refined.

Location

By the sea, outside the center of Sorrento

The hotel is located on a fairly busy one-way road and next to a soccer stadium in a small business district that’s a 15-minute walk from the center of Sorrento. It’s also a 12-minute walk from the Sorrento train station. Amalfi and Mount Vesuvius are both reached by car in about an hour. It’s about an hour by ferry to Capri and an hour by car to Naples International Airport.

Rooms

Spacious, elegant rooms with scenic balconies

The hotel’s 115 spacious rooms match the common areas of the hotel in elegance and are decorated in a traditional style, with painted ceramic tiles, fabric headboards, and matching throws in red or gold. There are simple gilded mirrors and chandeliers. The bathrooms are filled with colorful tiles and have large marble vanities, with shower/tub combos -- and a separate tub and stall shower in the Ambassador Suite. Some rooms face the street, while the rooms overlooking the sea or the garden offer a much nicer, and quieter, experience. Amenities include flat-screen TVs, minibars, and hairdryers, though no coffee- or tea-making facilities.

Features

A restaurant with outdoor seating, private bathing platform, and outdoor pool

The hotel’s Restaurant Le Muse has both indoor and outdoor seating, serves a buffet breakfast, and has two sections for dinner, one with the menu of the day, the other one with a la carte selections. There are three bars, including one that serves snacks. There is a small beach, which is a wooden platform with sun loungers, reached by an elevator, as well as an outdoor freeform pool. Private transfers and excursions, as well as car rentals, can be arranged. Room, laundry, and babysitting services are available for an additional fee. Small pets are accepted but they are not allowed in the common areas. There is a fee for parking.
