Cons

Bottom Line

The 142-room Bristol Hotel near the center of Sorrento is a popular choice for events, as well as for groups. It consists of three large concrete buildings; common areas are plain and slightly formal, with inlay marble floors and mirrored elevator doors. While the front of the hotel overlooks a street, the back abuts a cliffside overlooking the Tyrrhenian Sea. Many of the hotel’s facilities, including the multiple restaurants, pool, and rooftop bar, take full advantage of the spectacular views afforded by this position. Rooms are spacious and most provide sweeping views, but decor varies widely -- some are a touch dated and unfinished while others are appealing and modern.

Scene

A large, concrete hotel

This large concrete building has a fairly industrial feel on the outside, and consists of three joined structures. The lobby and common areas are all fairly plain in décor, with some nice details like an inlay marble floor and some mirrored walls. There are plenty of places to gather and sit throughout, consisting mainly of a mix of contemporary easy chairs, variably stuffed, wicker, and carved wood. Contemporary artwork hangs here and there in the lobby.

Location

15-minute walk to the train and bus stations and equally close to the center of town

The property is located a relatively easy walk to the center of Sorrento, including its train and bus stations, which give access to day trips like Pompeii, Vesuvius, Naples, and the Amalfi coast. Piazza Tasso is about a 20-minute walk. Guests have noted this is probably not the best location for access to nightlife, because it is closer to the old part of town than the section with the bulk of bars.

Rooms

Large, airy, and simple rooms, some with striking modern decor

Rooms here are large and fairly minimal; guests have noted the beds are comfortable, and the views often spectacular. Décor can vary widely -- some have bright blue tile floors, simple headboards, and little else besides basic laminate furniture; others have contemporary design furnishings and are outfitted in striking black and white. Many of the rooms have balconies overlooking the sea; some of these are located directly below the hotel’s bar, and guests have complained of being able to hear not only the nightly live music but also chairs being dragged across the floor. All rooms have satellite TV and air-conditioning; some have private hot tubs.

Features

A fitness center, a rooftop restaurant, and a poolside bar

The hotel has a rooftop restaurant with fantastic views of the Bay of Naples, as well as an outdoor pool with the same, which itself is flanked by an outdoor bar. A small fitness center features a handful of exercise machines; there is also a spa with a dry sauna and a hot tub, a small yard with a modest playground, and a tiny mini-golf course. Some have griped about small hidden charges, like a fee for extra pool towels or tea bags.
