Bottom Line

It's hard not to be impressed by the lavishness on display at the Antiche Mura Hotel -- even if it might go a little overboard at times. The setting overlooking the Valley of the Mills in the heart of Sorrento is superb, but don't expect sea views. The fragrant citrus garden surrounding the central pool is a wonderful retreat, and there's plenty of patio seating to relax with a drink. It's not cheap, but it is a real peaceful oasis in the center of this bustling town.

Scene

Elegant Belle-Époque style villa with sumptuous decor and colorful gardens

Taking its name from the ancient walls of the town, the Antiche Mura Hotel is housed in an elegant Belle-Epoque-style villa built in the 19th century and completely refurbished in 2005. Interiors encapsulate classical elegance -- the lobby is a lavish blend of ornate antiques, gilded mirrors, and highly polished marble, all of which are illuminated with a golden chandelier and elaborate wall-mounted lighting. The hotel is surrounded by lush, private gardens lined with colorful flowerbeds, dotted with lemon and orange trees, and encircled by 16th-century ruins and cannons overgrown with ivy.

Location

Overlooking the haunting Valley of the Mills in the heart of Sorrento

The hotel looks out onto the Valley of the Mills, a gorge containing the ruins of two former mills overgrown by thick vegetation. Its central location in the heart of Sorrento means that it's close to most of the town's attractions. The property sits adjacent to Piazza Tasso and is less than five minutes on foot to the train and bus station. It's a 10-minute walk from the marina and beaches an just over an hour to Naples by car.

Rooms

Beautifully tiled floors lead to bathrooms with hydro-massage showers

Rooms are classic but simple, with traditional furnishings. The intricate, multi-hued tiled flooring that throughout the rooms is beautiful, but clashes a bit with plaid bedspreads. All 46 rooms include free Wi-Fi, 32-inch flat-screen TVs with satellite channels, and well-stocked minibars. Bathrooms have marble-topped sinks and hydro-massage showers, and some have tubs. Comfort Rooms are larger and include balconies with views over the valley or gardens, while Economy Rooms have restricted views.

Features

Hydro-massage pool surrounded by citrus gardens overlooking the valley

The highlight of the Antiche Mura Hotel is its kidney-shaped pool with hydro-massage area, that's surrounded by an aromatic orchard of citrus trees dripping with oranges and lemons. The gardens look out onto the valley and the town's ancient walls and are dotted with lounge chairs. An extensive breakfast buffet is served overlooking the gardens, and afternoon tea and evening drinks can be taken on the terrace. Unusually for Sorrento, the hotel has a 24-hour secure parking lot, but parking is not free. Wi-Fi is free throughout, and there's a business center and Internet point with computer terminals.
