Bottom Line

The 13-room, luxury boutique B&B Honor Mansion in Healdsburg may look like little more than a charming Victorian house from the street, but it actually sits on four acres of beautifully landscaped grounds that include tennis courts, a lap pool, a PGA putting green, and so much more. In addition to its luxury resort amenities, the intimate inn is filled with thoughtful extras, such as afternoon wine tastings, coffee at your door each morning, and snacks available all day long. Guestrooms are romantic and cozy, with fireplaces, memory foam mattress toppers, and ornate, tiled bathrooms. And, to top it all off, the hotel is within walking distance of downtown Healdsburg's shops and restaurants, and Napa and Sonoma's wineries -- many of which Honor Mansion's owners have relationships with -- are within easy driving distance.

Scene

Romantic bed-and-breakfast feel with luxury-resort-style extras, on four peaceful acres

Built in 1880, Honor Mansion's Victorian home's architecture has been faithfully restored, while plenty of modern extras have been added to the building to make it a peaceful and romantic wine country oasis. The expansive grounds are filled with manicured hedges and lawns, a redwood tree-shaded koi pond, and plenty of intimate sitting areas, while a white picket fence borders the road. Indoors, fireplaces, antique furniture, and oil paintings only add to the romance, without feeling kitschy. The hotel serves an extensive hot buffet breakfast in a room that feels like a Henry James novel come to life, with lush drapes, carved wooden chairs, gilded mirrors, fresh flowers, and several private nooks for tete-a-tetes over the scones of the day. On sunny mornings, guests often take their breakfasts out to the deck overlooking the koi pond. Each afternoon, a free afternoon wine tasting is held in an elegantly wallpapered room, under an antique chandelier, and the spread includes a variety of cheese, fruit, and other treats. The pool deck is similarly idyllic, with a choice of seating that includes sunbeds, Adirondack chairs, and loungers -- it's a relaxed pool scene, focused on basking, as poolside massage cabanas aren't far away.

Location

Walking distance to downtown Healdsburg, convenient to area wineries

The Honor Mansion is located off California's Highway 101, in the center of Sonoma County's wine country, less than a mile from downtown Healdsburg. The hotel is a pretty 15- to 20-minute walk to excellent restaurants, bars, and boutiques. The inn sits on a somewhat busy residential road, but the property extends back four acres, making it very quiet and peaceful. An ideal base for exploring Sonoma and Napa wineries, Honor Mansion is also popular with golfers, with several nearby courses.

Rooms

Fireplaces, memory foam beds, whirlpool tubs, and private patios

Each room at the Honor Mansion is individually designed and decorated, but all are elegant and luxurious. Many have fireplaces, and one even has a fireplace in the bathroom. Rooms are light and airy, with plenty of windows, brass beds (with memory foam mattresses), and comfortable sitting areas, as well as large flat-screen TVs, DVD players and movies, CD players with an assortment of music, and iPod docks. Some rooms have private decks with sun-loungers and even outdoor hot tubs. Bathrooms combine a vintage-inspired feel with all modern amenities, and some have walls of windows, and fun touches like rubber duckies. It's worth noting that rooms in the main house tend to be smaller and those on the front can get some street noise.

Features

Lap pool, putting green, tennis, croquet, bocce, and snacks all day

Despite feeling like an intimate B&B, Honor Mansion has features worthy of a luxury resort. At the heart of the grounds is a 40-foot, solar-heated lap pool surrounded by luxurious sunbeds and tables where guests can eat breakfast, exercise, take a nap, or enjoy a poolside massage. Avid exercisers have access to a nearby gym facility, but there are tennis, bocce and basketball courts on site, as well as croquet and putting greens. Cookies, fresh fruit, coffee, and soda are available around the property at all times; a free afternoon wine tasting offers cheese, fruit, and other savory treats to accompany the local wines, which are presented by staff members and local experts. Breakfast is extensive -- with hot items changing daily to accompany fresh fruit and baked goods -- and can be delivered to guest rooms for a slight surcharge; each morning starts, too, with biscotti and a pot of coffee delivered to your door.
