Hotel Asturias
11 Plaza Mayor Gijón

The no-frills Hotel Asturias has a great location in the heart of Madrid within easy walking distance to major attractions, shopping, dining, and nightlife. Most of the 175 rooms are spacious and bright, but have worn, dated decor, and old tube TVs. The highlight of the rooms isn't the decor, but the beautiful architecture of this historic building -- along with small, wrought-iron balconies. Some rooms have been renovated and feature flat-screen TVs. This is an adequate budget pick, but it's worth checking out the nearby High Tech Petite Palace Arenal as alternate affordable option.

Hotel Moderno

The 97-room Hotel Moderno is a two-and-a-half-pearl hotel with a spot-on location for travelers wanting to be right in the center of Madrid. The property sits on Puerta del Sol and is close to the metro, surrounded by restaurants, shops, and attractions. Rooms are simple and modern, and feature flat-screen TVs, kettles for tea and coffee, and safes. Some have little balconies, and others have larger terraces. However, not all are air-conditioned and noise from Puerto del Sol can be loud. Extras are limited, but a breakfast buffet is available, and there's a nice lounge space where guests can hang out. Travelers looking for lower rates in the same area could check out the nearby Hotel Europa, which has a popular on-site cafe but rather bland rooms.

Hotel Europa

There are 99 guest rooms at this two-and-a-half-pearl property set in the historic heart of Madrid. Right on Puerta del Sol, the hotel is a stone’s throw from the city’s most popular places to eat, shop, and sightsee. There's also a metro station just downstairs, so getting farther afield by public transportation is easy as well. There aren’t a huge amount of facilities on-site, but the restaurant and pavement cafe serve excellent Spanish food and are popular day and night. Rooms have air-conditioning and free Wi-Fi, although they are simple and dated. Those who like a more contemporary decor may prefer the nearby Hotel Regina, where rates are comparable most of the year.

Hotel Atlantico

This 82-room, upscale hotel has a charming boutique feel. Despite its excellent location on the bustling Gran Via in the heart of Madrid, the hotel feels serene. The ornate, whimsically-carved facade is matched by the care taken with the interior: immaculately clean, and decorated with tapestries, sculptures and artwork that evoke European history. The Hotel Atlantico's top-notch service and sunny, sophisticated rooftop bar with panoramic views of the city are highlights.

Hotel Ada Palace
1127 Jirón Ancash Huancayo Huancayo

The tiny front desk, lack of an actual lobby, and small elevators might give a poor first impression of this upscale boutique hotel, but don't be deterred. Inside, spacious rooms are elegant (pale yellow striped walls, blue and white toile bedspreads), and have flat-screen TVs, minibars, and hydro massage showers. Additional highlights here include a wonderful (and expensive) restaurant with gorgeous views of the surrounding buildings, and a stylish rooftop lounge. While there is no parking, no fitness center, and the business center is basically a single computer, rates tend to be fair and the location on Gran Via is hard to beat. However, there is a pesky daily fee for Wi-Fi.
