Bottom Line

Value Hotel Thomson is a budget hotel with a bit more to offer than its competitors, though the less-than-central location is a trade-off. The 366 rooms are modern, but can be tiny and many lack seating aside from the beds. Additionally, entry-level Standard Rooms lack windows, and bathrooms are compact. The outdoor pool is a real bonus, and there's a tiny gym too. A buffet breakfast is served, and there's a convenience store, though local shops and dining outlets are nearby. For the price, it's a decent option for guests who don't mind a metro ride into town, and it's rare to get a pool for these rates in Singapore. For an alternative closer to the city center, consider Hotel 81 - Tristar, though its Geylang location won't suit everyone.

Scene

Modern budget hotel that's a relatively inexpensive place to sleep for a couple nights

Value Hotel Thomson is a large tower block that sits on a busy road on the outskirts of Singapore's city center. Its name doesn't conjure up visions of grandeur, so the decor inside is a pleasant surprise, as it has a plain, but contemporary look. Large colorful paintings and sculptures brighten the smart monochrome finish, along with bright flower arrangements. Many budget hotels in the city are small townhouses, this one, being farther out of the city, has the luxury of space (at least in common areas), and the pool is a real plus. There's a constant stream of guests in and out, mostly tourists -- from families attracted to the low rates and amenities, to thrifty young couples who don't mind the MRT ride into town.

Location

Residential location, 30 minutes by bus or train to downtown attractions

Value Hotel Thomson is located a fair way out of the city center in Novena -- a mostly residential district. There's a good handful of shops and eateries nearby, plus larger malls in the center of Novena, a 10- to 15-minute walk from the hotel. The bus stops a few minutes away on foot, outside of Thomson Medical Centre, and run to Orchard Road and Little India in about 30 minutes. Getting to attractions in the city center is quickest by MRT, and the hotel has a free shuttle to the Novena station (offered only in the mornings). Novena station links directly to Dhoby Gaut and Fort Canning, as well as Raffles Place downtown, in around 30 to 35 minutes door-to-door. Changi Airport takes 20 minutes to reach by taxi (the journey isn't direct by public transit and can take nearly 90 minutes).

Rooms

Basic rooms with reasonably modern style, though seating and windows are often absent

Rooms at the Value Hotel Thomson have a contemporary, simple finish that includes wood-effect furniture and muted walls. However, they can be small and are the definition of basic -- many rooms even lack seating beyond the beds. Standard Rooms also lack windows, so it's worth upgrading to a Superior or Superior Plus Room if that's an issue. Superior Rooms also have a bit more space, and some have views over the pool deck. Superior Plus Rooms can accommodate an extra bed. Amenities include air-conditioning, flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, electric kettles, bottled water, and free W-Fi. The small bathrooms have a wet-room set-up, which does mean everything gets soaked during a shower. They include a decent selection of toiletries, and hairdryers are provided.

Features

Outdoor pool, basic fitness room, restaurant and mini-mart, plus limited free shuttle to Novena MRT

Value Hotel Thomson has a good-sized rooftop pool that's ringed by several sun loungers. Views look out over the city. Beside the pool is a small fitness room with a bike and treadmill. There's a restaurant serving a buffet breakfast with both local and western choices, as well as meals throughout the day. Room service is available, and there's a mini-mart with an ATM. The lobby has two guest PCs with internet access, plus a tour desk. The free shuttle service to Novena MRT is convenient, though it only runs during the morning hours. Wi-Fi is free, and parking is available for a fee.
