Bottom Line

Value Hotel Balestier offers a good value for visitors who don't mind a hotel with few features and just want a place to sleep. However, it's worth noting that this budget property's Balestier location isn't exactly near any train stations, but access to the hotel's free shuttle as well as nearby public buses help a great deal. Its 208 rooms are clean and relatively modern, with extras like mini-fridges and bathtubs in some. There is no restaurant on-site, but there are plenty of decent cafes and local eateries in the immediate vicinity. The hotel's sister property Value Hotel Thomson is just up the road and has a pool and an on-site restaurant for guests that want a little more for similar rates.

Scene

Basic property with few frills, ideal for leisure tourists traveling on a budget

Located on a high-traffic street in the Balestier area, the streetside hotel looks like the budget property it is. There are no common areas on the premises aside from the long, plain lobby that's barely furnished with just a few leather chairs and computer stations. Guests that check-in here tend to be unfussy leisure travelers -- mostly couples and solo travelers -- who want an affordable place to sleep for a few nights and use as a base for exploring the city.

Location

Just outside of Singapore's city center -- dining and buses nearby; 20-minute walk to train stations

The hotel is set in Balestier, where many residential buildings, conserved shophouses, and famous local eateries are situated. The property's central-ish location is not bad; there's a bus stop right outside the hotel with several lines that can get you to areas like Little India and popular shopping destinations such as Bugis and Orchard Road in under 30 minutes. If you prefer to walk, the two nearest train stations, Novena and Boon Keng, are about 20 minutes from the hotel on foot. Other destinations, like Marina Bay and Clarke Quay, are best reached by taxi, which should take around 15 to 20 minutes. It's a 25-minute ride to Changi Airport, but avoid flagging down a cab on the road outside the hotel as it can get pretty chaotic. Instead, book one in advance (or get front desk to help you out) so the taxi can enter via the carpark in the basement.

Rooms

Bright and straightforward air-conditioned rooms that are clean and include flat-screen TVs and free Wi-Fi

The five room types here measure between 129 to 248 square feet (12 to 23 square meters) and are clean and well-lit. With minimal wall art and some neutral-colored details plus with dark curtains, the look for each room is simple and straightforward. Standard amenities include coffee- and tea-making facilities, hairdryers, and flat-screen TVs with cable channels. Some of the higher-tier rooms feature additions like mini-fridges, wardrobes, and bathtubs. The brown-and-white tiled bathrooms are just as unadorned as the rooms, and include basic toiletries like shampoo and dental kits. Keep in mind that the bathrooms aren't fitted with shower curtains, so expect the floor to be wet after use. Also, note that the entry-level rooms have no windows, and most rooms pick up some noise from the street below and the nearby highway.

Features

Workstations with Internet in the lobby and free daily shuttle rides

The features here are almost non-existent, which is how the hotel keeps its rates low. The lobby has internet-ready PCs for guests to use, and another welcome addition is the free shuttle service. It runs daily and takes guests to Novena MRT train station, though it's only available during morning hours.
