The [email protected] is a budget property with private rooms and some not-often-seen hostel features like dorms with regular beds instead of bunk beds. The 58 rooms are simple, but they offer free bottled water and en-suite bathrooms. Amenities are surprisingly well-rounded, from the small rooftop pool and terrace with seating to a comfy lounge with a TV, computers, and library nook. A free breakfast doesn’t hurt, even if the selections are basic. While there’s enough here to satisfy most budget travelers, keep in mind that it’s at the top of a hill, and the 10-minute walk from the nearest metro could be difficult for some. For a lively hostel experience, travelers could check out The Shophouse The Social Hostel which has similar amenities and a cafe.
Scene
Budget hostel property with plenty of indoor and outdoor public spaces
Opened in 2004, [email protected] is and isn’t your typical budget property. Sure, it’s modern and compact with dorms and private rooms, but with an outdoor pool and dorms with regular beds, it takes the budget stay up a notch. There’s enough to do and see here beyond getting a good night’s sleep, like enjoying the lovely rooftop terrace complete with a full garden of potted plants and trees. The lobby is stylish with a gray color scheme broken up by pops of color in funky, soft round benches on patterned rugs. The hotel created a comfortable environment in the public lounge, a spot with cozy seating and a large flat-screen TV for movie nights, or a darling library corner where guests can enjoy a free cup of coffee and a book. With its wide range of rooms and affordable prices, the property attracts all kinds of travelers from families to couples to backpackers.
Location
Hilltop location that's a 12-minute walk from Singapore's Little India and Chinatown
The hotel sits on top of a hill in a quiet area that doesn’t see buses, taxis, or much foot traffic. It’s a 10-minute walk downhill to the closest metro stop and restaurants. The walk back to the hotel may be a bit cumbersome for some. Some of Singapore’s attractions can be reached on foot. The Gothic Gate is within a 23-minute walk, while Little India and Chinatown are both within 12-minute walks. It’s a 20-minute drive to Changi Airport Singapore.
Rooms
Dorms with regular beds and en-suite bathrooms; private rooms with air-conditioning and free bottled water
The dorm rooms at [email protected] are unlike those found at most hostels, as they offer six to seven regular beds (versus bunk beds) per room, as well as en-suite bathrooms, for a more comfortable atmosphere. Private rooms and dorms are the same in that the design is simple with wood laminate floors and white beds. They only differ in statement colors. Private rooms feature lime green walls and dorms sport orange statement walls. Amenities are the same among room types: air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, and free bottled water. Private rooms also have safes, but they lack TVs or kettles. Bathrooms are simple but adequate with small showers, toiletries in wall dispensers, and hairdryers. Some rooms have pleasant views of the green streets.
Features
Well-rounded amenities like outdoor pool, free breakfast, and lounge area
The hotel packs a good amount of amenities into a budget property. There’s a lovely-- albeit small -- outdoor swimming pool with a rainfall area. It sits on the rooftop patio complete with a garden, loungers, and seating. There’s a free breakfast buffet every day but it’s fairly basic with pastries, jams, fruit, coffee, and sometimes eggs. The lobby has a small snack shop for purchasing drinks or snacks throughout the day. Guests can enjoy free coffee or prep a snack in the microwave found in the lounge area. The space is also outfitted with a large flat-screen TV, three public computers, a library, and an outdoor (unofficial smoker’s) terrace. Free Wi-Fi, a coin-operated laundry room, and locker rentals are available here, too.
