This upper-middle-range hotel is centrally located in Singapore’s Chinatown, within easy walking distance of tourist attractions and the financial district. With 23 floors, it towers over most neighboring buildings, and many of its 445 rooms have scenic city views. It's fairly well-maintained for an older property, but decor is bland throughout and many guest rooms lack free Wi-Fi. The best rooms are Executive Club options, which are more modern and can access a lounge with free breakfast and evening cocktails. The on-site restaurant serves buffet and a la carte options, and a lobby lounge has daily happy hour. The hotel's small pool is tucked away in a cramped courtyard, while the tiny gym feels like an afterthought. The nearby, upscale Park Regis has similar rates, plus a nicer pool and free use of Wi-Fi-equipped smartphones.
Scene
Older hotel with a mall atmosphere
The Furama City Centre occupies an imposing, tiered-roof building constructed in 1984 and surrounded by other commercial structures. Its most remarkable interior space is its vast, three-story lobby with a small shopping mall at the top and a cocktail lounge off to one side. It would be easy to mistake the whole space for a mall, with its escalators, tall columns, and hanging vines. The Tiffany Cafe & Restaurant has a similar '80s-style look, with simple slipcovered chairs and a black, brown, and beige color scheme. The Executive Lounge, a perk of the higher-level rooms, has a swanky look, but is overall fairly plain, with black banquettes and chairs and white round tables. The crowd at the hotel is a mix of tourists and business travelers who are there more for the location than the vibe.
Location
In Chinatown, walkable to shopping, Clark Quay, and a MRT station
The hotel is located in Singapore’s Chinatown. It's surrounded by commercial buildings and connected by sky bridges to two malls with many dining options. While the area is busy during the day, it becomes quiet at night. It’s close to office buildings, about a five-minute walk to the financial district, and a 10-minute walk to Clark Quay, a riverside shopping complex. The Chinatown MRT station is a five-minute walk, with a trip to the Singapore Flyer or the Gardens by the Bay taking roughly 25 minutes (or around 10 minutes by car). The Changi Airport is a 20-minute drive, or over an hour via public transportation.
Rooms
Bland decor and paid Wi-Fi; some have more modern look and nice city views
Decor in the hotel's standard rooms is plain, dated, and fairly corporate. Dark patterned carpet and two-tone wood headboards are the only variations in the otherwise beige and white color scheme. Walls are unadorned and the abundance of built-in wood furniture can make some rooms feel cramped. Executive Club rooms and Suites have brighter lighting, more modern black furniture, and more polish overall. And those on higher floors feature views of the Marina Bay area and Esplanade. Executive options also come with free Wi-Fi (unlike lower-tier Superior and Deluxe rooms) and access to the Executive Lounge with free breakfast and evening cocktails. Suites also add kitchenettes with microwaves, separate lounges with 42-inch flat-screen TVs, and upscale soaking tubs. Superior rooms have bathrooms with showers, while most Deluxe, and all Executive, rooms have separate tubs and glass-walled stall showers, plus sleek black vanities in some. Hairdryers and toiletries are provided. All rooms have flat-screen TVs, coffee- and tea-making facilities, and safes. Only Superior rooms lack minibars. Guests have reported mustiness, but overall rooms are clean and in good condition.
Features
Restaurant with buffet, small outdoor pool, tiny gym, large ballroom
The on-site Tiffany Cafe & Restaurant focuses on international cuisine and serves buffet and a la carte menus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Breakfast is free for Executive-level guests. 24-hour room service is available. The Lobby Lounge takes up much of the lobby space and serves cocktails, plus hosts a nightly happy hour. As far as features go, the hotel has a basic array but lacks anything notable. The outdoor swimming pool is surrounded by shrubbery, with a good view of the surrounding buildings. However, the pool deck is fairly small and there can be stiff competition for the few lounge chairs. The on-site gym is also tiny, with limited cardio machines and a set of free weights. The hotel has a handful of event spaces for corporate or private gatherings, including a ballroom for up to 550 guests with audiovisual services. There's also a business center. Coin-operated laundry is available and Wi-Fi is free throughout most of the hotel's public spaces.
