Bottom Line

The Aqueen Hotel
Lavender is a mid-range, chain hotel located in Singapore's Little India. While there isn't much in the hotel's immediate vicinity, a few restaurants and the Mustafa Center are within a 15-minute walk, and the Lavender Mass Rapid Transit station is within a 10-minute walk -- the trip to downtown takes about 20 minutes. Rooms are
smart yet basic, and come with minibars, coffeemakers, and flat-screen TVs, although some can feel cramped. While
the on-site cafe is bright and pleasant with a curving glass wall and an outdoor terrace, there's little else in the way of facilities beyond free Wi-Fi. The location is off the well-worn tourist path, but the Aqueen's rates are reasonable and likely lower than those at comparable downtown properties.

Scene

Pleasant, modern chain hotel with glass facade and few frills

With its
distinctive curving glass facade, the Aqueen Hotel Lavender, which opened in 2009, looks very much the
modern city property. Large sliding doors swish open to the lobby, which is flooded with
natural light. Furnishings, though, are sparse, and include little more than a leather couch and a flat-screen TV. Swirl-patterned carpeting and wallpaper make up the decor. Reception consists of a minimalist white desk, while a pleasant cafe-restaurant with chic Scandinavian-style furnishings, wooden
floors, a curved glass wall, and a terrace for alfresco dining sits adjacent to it. A pair of lobby elevators transport
guests -- mainly couples and families -- to the hotel's six
floors.

Location

Set in Singapore's Little India area, within a 10-minute walk of the MRT Lavender station

The hotel
overlooks a busy main road in the Little India area of Singapore's southeastern
district of Kallang. While there's not a great deal in the hotel's immediate vicinity, a few local restaurants and the Mustafa
Center, with its 24-hour shopping, are within a 15-minute walk. The hip boutiques on the popular Haji Lane
in the Kampong Glam neighborhood are within a 20-minute walk. The
closest MRT station -- Lavender -- is a 10-minute walk away and connects to
downtown Singapore in 20 minutes. It's about a 20-minute drive to Changi
International Airport, or up to an hour's ride on public transportation.

Rooms

Clean, functional rooms with standard amenities -- though some are tiny

The hotel has 105 air-conditioned rooms, all of which are simply decorated in neutral shades of gray and beige. Furnishings are modern and more functional than decorative. All rooms come with tea- and coffee-making facilities, free Wi-Fi, minibars, and 32-inch flat-screen TVs with a few international channels. Room size varies: Deluxe and Queen Rooms can be spacious, while Twin Rooms can feel cramped. Bathrooms are modern, clean, and
well-maintained with walk-in showers and wall-mounted shampoo and soap dispensers.

Features

Pleasant all-day cafe and free Wi-Fi throughout

There's not a
great deal in the way of facilities at the hotel, though a pleasant on-site
cafe-/restaurant offers an all-day menu of Western and local fare for
breakfast, lunch, and dinner, and a furnished terrace also allows for alfresco
dining. The reception desk is staffed around the clock, and there's a laundry
service for guests. Wi-Fi is free throughout the hotel.
