Size can make the hotel feel impersonal
At 73 stories, the upscale Swissotel The Stamford is the tallest hotel in Singapore, situated within Raffles City shopping and entertainment hub in the bustling commercial center. All upper-floor rooms have stunning views, and newly renovated rooms are smartly presented. About a dozen restaurants and bars can be found without leaving the complex, along with two outdoor swimming pools, a fitness center, spa, and tennis courts. Swisshotel The Stamford's size and facilities are impressive, but they can feel impersonal. For a little more style, the sister Fairmont Hotel, also in the Raffles City complex, trumps its bigger sibling.
Scene
Soaring skyscraper hotel with a bustling, professional vibe
Opened in 1986 as the Westin Stamford, the Swissotel The Stamford, at more than 740 feet, is not just the tallest hotel in Singapore but one of the tallest in Southeast Asia. And it's one of two hotels in the Raffles City shopping and entertainment complex -- the other is its equally upscale sister hotel Fairmont Singapore, which shares the Stamford's swimming pools and spa facilities. The hotel's understated lobby is constantly abuzz with the coming and going of tourists and
business travelers, while numerous elevators shuttle guests to one of 1,261 rooms across 73 floors. The vibe is corporate, and the hotel can feel impersonal, but the numerous restaurants and bars draw a lively evening crowd of both hotel guests and locals.
Location
Set in Singapore's busy commercial center, above the City Hall MRT station
Part of the Raffles City complex, the hotel is located in the heart of Singapore's buzzing business and commercial district surrounded by an abundance of some of the city's best shops, restaurants, and bars.
The hotel also sits above the City Hall subway station (MRT) that connects throughout the city and beyond, while the iconic waterfront is within walking distance. Changi International Airport is less than a 20-minute drive from the hotel, and about an hour away via public transportation.
Rooms
Most rooms are smartly styled with balconies
Renovated rooms are smart and tastefully styled in earthy tones with warm wood and designer details like lucite lamps, oval mirrors, and leather benches. Large glass doors slide open to small unfurnished
balconies with either city or harbor views, and some of the most spectacular -- and dizzying -- in the region. Amenities include tea- and coffee-making facilities, minibars, and flat-screen TVs with satellite channels. Marble bathrooms are well maintained with shower/tub combos, adjustable shower heads, bidets, and scales.
Features
Vast selection of eating and drinking places, and two outdoor pools
There are 10 restaurants in all -- with cuisine ranging from modern European fine dining to pan-Asian buffet -- while a handful of bars and lounges include nightclubs and cigar bars. Several venues are found on the 70th floor Equinox complex, which offers stunning panoramic
vistas. The Stamford also features one of Asia's largest full-service spas, and two outdoor swimming pools (which are shared with the neighboring Fairmont). There's a large fitness center with free weights and a wide range of cardio machines, as well as six tennis courts. Business customers are particularly well catered to with an enormous conference center and 27 meeting rooms, as well as an on-site conference management team. Parking incurs an additional fee.
