Bottom Line

Staying in a castle is an undoubtedly romantic experience, and the Castello Delle Quattro Torra is an affordable and familial alternative to many of the more opulent castle hotels found in the Italian countryside. A short drive from Siena, this family-run bed and breakfast has only three rooms, including an apartment and a two-story tower room, all of which can be rented by the night or -- for a discount -- by the week. There's little to do in the surrounding area, and guests really need a car, although those who love walking can hike to Siena in about 45 minutes.

Scene

Family-run B&B in a medieval castle

From the outside, the family-run Castello Delle Quattro Torra looks deserted. Despite the four-towered medieval castle's imposing size, it has only three guest rooms plus the living quarters of its owners. After entering through a huge door, guests make their way through a castle yard and up several steps to the lobby, which is actually the hosts' living room. It's charming and inviting, with a cross-beam ceiling, red-brick walls, terra-cotta floors, wide windows, and a fireplace and hearth. There's no elevator, but there is a pulley for luggage. Note that a few cats live on the premises, a pro for feline fanciers but a con for those who have dander allergies.

Location

Hilltop location near Siena

The castle is on a hilltop in a rural area overlooking Siena, a 15-minute drive away (or a 45-minute hike). The location appears remote, but a bar, a pizzeria, a supermarket, a restaurant, and cash machines are about three-quarters of a mile away. Siena Airport is about a half hour's drive, and Florence is a little more than hour away.

Rooms

Three individually styled rooms, which include an apartment

There are three rooms at the Castello Delle Quattro Torra -- the Blue Room, the Tower Room, and an apartment. The Blue Room has exposed red-brick walls and beams, and, true to its name, blue furnishings, including a blue, pink, purple, and green plaid headboard and matching lampshade. There are also a minibar and a tea kettle, as well as a small flat-screen TV. The green-and-white tiled bathroom is huge, and includes a big well-lit mirror, a bidet, and a separate shower and tub. The Tower Room is housed in one of the hotel's four towers and extends over two sunny floors -- a spiral staircase connects the two levels. It has a red color scheme, with a large tapestry-style wall hanging and solid red bedding. The apartment, which would suit families or groups of friends, has exposed wooden beam ceilings and terra-cotta floors, a separate master bedroom, a living room with a pull-out sofa bed, and its own kitchen with a dishwasher and washing machine.

Features

Daily breakfast and free Wi-Fi

The castle setting is the main feature here. A free breakfast is served every morning off the living room area, and there's a reading room with books for guests to peruse. There's also a small computer station, and Wi-Fi is available throughout the property.
