Bottom Line

The UNA Hotel Palace is a chic, 94-room upscale hotel on bustling Via Etnea, within walking distance of restaurants, shops, and sights. Highlights include a rooftop bar, lounge, and restaurant, with terrific views of the city and Mount Etna. A second bar and restaurant are downstairs, and a free breakfast buffet is served as well. Business amenities include an eight-room conference center -- and there's a small gym and steam room. Rooms are sophisticated with marble bathrooms and minibars, but entry-level rooms can be small and don't include free Wi-Fi or flat-screen TVs. Travelers might want to also consider the Liberty Hotel, which is smaller with classic Art Nouveau decor, but it's not as centrally located.

Scene

Chic hotel pairing a minimalistic color palette with baroque and Sicilian accents

The UNA Hotel Palace is housed in an early 1900s building with a dark gray facade embellished with white-stone window trim and lintels. The lobby and common areas tastefully combine minimalist style with baroque pieces and Caltagirone designs. In the lobby, neutral tile floors and white walls pair with elegant brown button-tufted seating and armchairs with gold-painted Queen Anne legs. Chandeliers dangle above, while bright Caltagirone ceramic tile floors add a little color to this mostly black-and-white hotel. The rooftop restaurant, bar, and lounge are standouts, with nice views of the city and Mount Etna. There are plenty of plush indoor and outdoor spots for lounging, and small cactus gardens. With its central location, upscale vibe, and business services, this is a hotspot for leisure travelers and corporate travelers alike.

Location

On bustling Via Etnea in downtown Catania, a 10-minute walk to the historic center

UNA Hotel Palace is on Via Etnea, one of Cantania's main streets. The street is filled with shops and restaurants (including some on the first floor of the hotel), and Giardino Bellini park is down the block (a two-minute walk). The historic center is about a 10-minute walk from the hotel, whose sights include the Piazza San Placido, the Cathedral of St. Agatha, and the 19th-century Teatro Massimo Bellini. Castel Ursino is about a 15-minute walk. The city's train hub, Catania Centrale, is a bit of a hike with suitcases (a 17-minute walk), so guests recommend taking a taxi to the hotel if arriving by train. Catania Fontanarossa Airport is about a 20-minute drive. The hotel can arrange for airport or train station transportation; car service and garage parking is available as well.

Rooms

Sophisticated rooms in black and white, but limited amenities in entry-level rooms

The 94 rooms at the UNA Hotel Palace have simple, sophisticated decor that pairs a modern, minimalist color palette with traditional pieces. Dark wall-to-wall carpeting meets white walls, furniture, and drapes. Darker pieces add contrast -- most notably, a dark oak arabesque-style headboard that has a classic Caltagirone design. In Superior Rooms, two velvety black armchairs with gold Queen Anne legs are clustered around white side tables with white marble tops for a modern Baroque look. Bathrooms have marble tiling and black wrought-iron accents and may include bidets and showers, or shower/tub combos.

All rooms include air-conditioning, TVs, safes, and minibars, plus hairdryers and individually wrapped toiletries in the bathrooms. Guests are offered pillow menus as well. Classic and Superior Rooms are small, and lack coffeemakers. They may also have tube-style TVs, and in Classic Rooms, in-room Wi-Fi comes with a fee (it's free in all other rooms). Upgraded rooms might include separate sitting areas, flat-screen TVs, tea- and coffee-making facilities, bathrobes, and other extras.

Features

Rooftop restaurant and bar with exceptional views, free breakfast, and business amenities

The lobby-level UNA Restaurant is open for breakfast, lunch, and dinner and serves local dishes, including fresh fish, and the Etnea Roof restaurant on the 7th floor offers beautiful views of city's rooftops with a backdrop of Mount Etna. The Roof Garden bar offers the same views with cocktails, while the the UNA Cafe downstairs serves coffee and drinks. The hotel serves a free breakfast buffet with such hot and cold items as eggs, bacon, cereal, fruit, and croissants, plus fresh-squeezed orange juice. Or guests can pay for breakfast at the rooftop restaurant. Room service is available during limited hours.

There's a small but modern fitness center with a few cardio and weight-lifting machines. There's also a steam room (Turkish bath), but it comes with a fee. There's no pool or spa, though the concierge can arrange for massages and other personal services.
