The three-room La Libert' Bed and Breakfast is a humble, but comfortable choice for a budget stay in Palermo. Located next to Piazza Ruggero Settimo, the tiny property is central to many of city’s major sites, as well as numerous shopping, dining, and drinking options. Set inside a typical apartment building, the dreary entrance fails to hint at the light-filled penthouse that awaits on the top floor. Though simple in decor, La Libertà has been well updated and maintained, and offers rooms with modest but modern features. Two of the three rooms have private bathrooms, and all have access to the quiet rooftop terrace. A simple daily breakfast can be served in rooms or up on the roof. As an alternative, Palazzo Pantaleo B&B has larger rooms and is within walking distance to Teatro Massimo.
Scene
Quiet bed and breakfast located on the top floor of a typical apartment building
Located inside a characteristic Italian apartment building, reaching the La Liberta' Bed and Breakfast requires traversing a dark entryway filled with mail and the occasional bicycle belonging to full-time residents. Luckily, there is an elevator to transport guests and bags to the bright top floor entrance to the guesthouse. Inside, the updated penthouse apartment has been converted into three private rooms. Though central for visiting sites and accessing city buses, the B&B remains quiet throughout the day. In the mornings, guests sometimes take advantage of the rooftop terrace to enjoy the included Italian continental breakfast, but otherwise stick to the spacious rooms or spend time out exploring Palermo. The welcoming owners live on-site but keep a low profile, which appeals to independent travelers looking for a homey stay without concierge services.
Location
Overlooking Teatro Politeama, on the edge of Palermo's historic center
The bed-and-breakfast overlooks Piazza Ruggero Settimo and the striking domes of the historic Politeama Theater located on the square. On the edge of the city center, Liberta' is within walking distance of many of Palermo's main sights, including Teatro Massimo, il Capo market, and the Palermo Cathedral. Close to the bohemian Borgo Vecchio neighborhood, there are many affordable restaurants and bars within a few streets and the main shopping thoroughfare begins on the other side of the piazza. There is also a city bus stop in front of the hotel, and another stop for the airport bus within 30 seconds of the front door. The Palermo Airport is a 30-minute drive away.
Rooms
A total of three spacious rooms, but only two have private bathrooms
The small bed-and-breakfast has three rooms of varying sizes. La Romantica is a double room on the second floor with easy access to the rooftop terrace. Brightly hued L’indipendente is a triple room (with a queen bed and a single bed), a private bathroom and a balcony that overlooks a quiet internal courtyard. Finally, La Country is the largest room with two single beds and a queen bed. The spacious room’s lovely balcony overlooks Politeama Theater and a lively square. The only drawback is that La Country lacks a private bathroom. Instead, the spotless bathroom and shower are located down the hall and shared with the two respectful hotel owners who live on-site. All rooms feature flat-screen TVs with international channels, free Wi-Fi, air-conditioning, a kettle for tea and coffee, and a mini-fridge. Elaborate towel art placed on the beds is a fun touch.
Features
Free breakfast, Wi-Fi, and a seasonal rooftop terrace
La Liberta' is a simple and homey bed-and-breakfast with a few modest features and low rates. The kitchen is off limits to guests, but a basic Sicilian breakfast is included in the room rate. The morning meal usually includes pastries, fresh fruit, yogurt, juice and coffee, and can be served in the room or on the summer terrace. Two of the three rooms already have small balconies, but guests also have access to the shaded rooftop terrace in an internal courtyard for bit more breathing space. There are no other communal areas or dining options, but many bars and restaurants are within walking distance. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout.
