Bottom Line

If you don’t mind driving, the Poggio is a comfortable getaway outside of Ragusa that blends the beauty of Sicilian farmland and the elegance of a 19th-century manor. The property has been dolled up with modern flair and resort conveniences, including an outdoor pool, a spa, a bar, and restaurants. It's ideal for weddings or corporate events, as there is both a meeting room and a large amphitheater. All in all, it’s a great value compared to places closer to town.

Scene

Old Sicilian country manor with contemporary makeover

The Poggio del Sol is adds vibrant, modern flare to a 19th-century countryside villa. This old stone manor house is surrounded by palm trees and hay barrels and sits on the road that leads from Ragusa to the sea. The walls are made of stacked dry stone and the roof is built with wooden slabs. There are cool, beachy basket lamps hanging from the ceiling, but some of the interior decor is decidedly loud. Brightly colored chairs adorn the Hosteria restaurant and cow-spotted lamps hang over the bar. Dell'Angelo restaurant, situated in the property’s old farmhouse, is much more elegant, featuring stone walls with curved brick ceilings and passageways.

Location

Away from crowds in the breezy Ragusa countryside

The Poggio lies in the middle of the countryside, on a road that goes between the town of Ragusa and the marina, and guests really need a car to get around. Driving into town takes under 10 minutes, while the Ragusa Marina is a 15-minute drive. The Comiso Airport is less than a half hour away and getting to the Cantania Airport takes about an hour and a half. There are no attractions within walking distance.

Rooms

A mix of ancient stone and modern chic

Every room and suite at this resort is different. Some are equipped with sleek striped upholstery and sliding glass doors that separate the bathroom from the main room. The Levante Suite, situated in the old manor house, has stacked limestone walls, a winding staircase, and a loft, as well as contemporary touches such as artistic glass washbasins and showers. Some rooms have balconies overlooking the pool or countryside; all have mini-fridges, safes, and paid (though somewhat unreliable) Wi-Fi. Beware that beds are hard and not reported to be particularly comfortable.

Features

Large pool, opulent spa, and an outdoor ampitheater

The Poggio’s pool is clean, large, and surrounded by lounge chairs, and the spa is equipped with a spacious steam room, hot stone beds, and a whirlpool. The outdoor amphitheater, available for events or conferences, is a welcome alternative to the typical, cave-like meeting rooms found in many hotels, and the two restaurants, which serve fresh, local fare, open early and close late. Parking is free and easy to reach, and laundry service is available.
